Side Exit

Just done me side exit eggsauce. Will post pic soon. But, basically just took off back box section and ran flexi pipe from the end of the centre section over top of chassis, out the panel behind the rear wheel.

Reused both ends of the rear section on each end of the flexi pipe.

Used flexi pipe as I cant weld Heard they can unravel quite quickly?

Anyone used marine rubber exhaust tubing? Me thinks this could work quite well?

They make some nice outlets too, assuming fixed to body panel, which my version is.

Flexi tends to go brittle after it's got hot, then it snaps. Should last for a while though.

Are you sure that marine stuff isn't meant to be kept wet to keep the temperature down?

link shown is for wet exhaust pipe, so not suitable for the application (unless the head gasket has gone)

you've used the wrong kind of flexi, you want the aluminised steel core type which is a lot tougher

Still got the centre silencer, so not really noticeably any different to me.

Allthough, I do also have a hole the size of a tennis ball the upper portion of the front pipe section

Looking to do a side exit on my D1 one thing I cant work out though is how do you make the hole in the panel is there a hole saw that big for metal or is it stitch drill and file?

bosch make decent hole saws

I just used what I had. A wood one I think. Didn't have any problem with a thin ally panel.

Yep just get a bi-metal hole saw. They can be got in most sizes.

+1 got some bosch hole saws at home but we use starrett at work which are also good.

I used flexi and it held up for 8months.
I've now done it properly and got a local mate to weld up some pipe.
Here's a couple pics..
Note* it's all welded apart from one part in the middle where I used a clamp, if I it's welded all up you can't get the exhuast off/on when you want to. Just bolted normaly to the mid pipe using the old flange.
It's held in place by a clamp round the pipe attached to a mount on the tub.

Why does now one do a rear section that would take the shape of a flexi pipe for a side exit for defender and disco, mine a 200tdi defender has a newish full exhaust system with middle box but no rear box so sound wise i am half way there i could keep the rear section as is and just get a middle pipe to do away with the middle box but really want to have the exhaust coming out of the rear wing as paddocks and alike do the middle pipe but no rear pipe for exiting the rear wing

I'm going to be making mine as I like playing about and I have access to scrap exhaust pipe from work so got a few different tail pipes and a few corners just need to cut and weld to get it where I want it.
Is it just me or do defender side exits sit higher up the rear quarter that disco ones?

Discoverys have a small pannel though that's why, If a discovery had the same exhuast as what's on my fender it would have to come through the boot floor and out below the window.

That's the highest on a disco

On a fender you can go all the way up to were mine is at the top wheel arch on the tub.
