Shudder When Reversing

Hi

I would be grateful for some advice. I have a 1988 auto RR 3.5 which has covered 168k. When reversing slowly, and usually with left or right lock, I regularly experience a shudder from the car, could this be anything other than the gearbox (there is no problem at all when moving forward)?

jack front wheel up and see if its turns stiffly but smoothly ,if it wont turn viscous seized ,can be replaced without removing transfer box front output flange is bolted to it it comes off with the housing ,also if seized remove front prop and drive using rear till viscous changed to stop wind up in transmission breaking some other part like diff and increased tyre wear

Thanks for the advice James. I have done what you suggested and both wheels turn smoothly in each gear, including reverse.

didnt mean quite that did you try it with only one wheel jacked up
