Should there be a fuel return line or not?

Hello every one, I have checked the forum and cant really find a definite answer.

I wander if any body can help me with a question, I have a Rover V8 90 running on very worn, leaking original Stromberg carbs. So I have just purchased a cracking set of SU carbs complete with linkages and manifold of a Rover SD1 car that have been overhauled.
My question is, the Strombergs have a fuel return pipe back to the fuel tank, but the SUs do not any outlet for a return pipe.
why is this? can I fit them or will fuel keep filling them up and then over flow, or will the electric pump stop when the carb is full.
Any advice would be great or has anybody else done this conversion as I want to crack on and fit the carbs.
many thanks Andy

im not certain for a v8 but if it is like my 4cy was it did have a return but not from the carb, there was a bowl on the bulk head that the fuel pump delivers the fuel to, it then has the take off to the carb and the return. the fuel pump runs continuously

My disco with a facet and su fills/pressures the carb then the pump stops, theres no return.

There is an overflow which only flows when the carb float isnt working right.

It is not stock though like you it had shagged stombergs on

Thanks all for the replies, so what I can gather is basically no return on SU carbs the pump stops when full, and it only overflows if there is a fault.

Page 530 in parts manual there are return pipes on SU

having owned several V8 , 109 , 110, Discovery and RRC they all had spill system

the fuel pump runs continuously
there are also overflow pipes that take overflow away from exhaust system
