Hello,

I have a TD5 Discovery 1999 model so it has the straight 5 motor, The engine sounds great no knocking or anything out of the ordinary, However when running at around 1500rpm i get what i think is a louder than average whirling sound like road noise from the tyres but more agressive, Should i be looking at the auxilary drive belt and the parts that it spins ? or do you think it could be the fan catching up....

Any pointers would be great.

Thanks.

Could be your centrifugal oil filter, some of the TD5's do this. Faster engine speeds mean faster oil speeds, spinner goes faster, etc...

Could be the turbo I am not sure when the turbo kicks in on a TD5 but I would expect its spinning up a fair bit anyway by 1500rpm.

Thanks, I am sure its not the turbo as i can hear that spinning up when it comes in and its more of a whistle the a bearing groan,

I have just been out side to start it up to listen and now they seems to be a bearing intermitantly graoning but only for lets say the 1st 20 secounds of running but not constant for the 20 secs just on and of and after that it has stopped and engine ticks over good again, its just hard to locate were it is coming from. I think i will remove the aux belt and give things a spin around.Do i have to remove the fan or will the belt come off ?

Thanks.

the belt will come off, but a bit fidley without removing the fan. Simply grab a 15mm spanner and use it to back the tension off the tensioner pulley then ease the belt out.

it's a lot easier to do it with the fan off, grab a spanner for a tenner from halfords. TD5 is a right hand thread, Not left hand as would be stamped on the Halfords 32mm spanner.

it's the pulley on a spring loaded arm, use the 15mm spanner to lift it against the spring - do not undo it!

take of the top fan cowel with a cross point first

Use a brush handle as a stethoscope. Putr one end of it to all the places that could make strange noises and the other end close up to one ear and with a bit of luck you'll hear the problem and find out the source.

Ok ,

I have removed the belt and given everything a spin up,

1. The tensioner bearing is warn and it spins very easily with a slight rattle
2. The power steering wheel spins with a moan
3. Dunno id this is right but the fan is hard to turn then slackens off ?????

I ran it with no belt on and all sounded ok :)

What do you think

SORRY I HAVE IT WRONG

2. THE ITS THE AIRCON PULLEY THAT SPINS WITH MOAN.

This is a very interesting one for me. Ive got what sounds like the same problem and have asked questions about it. I'm pretty convinced its coming from the power steering. Someone told me that at some point in the system there are valve (or a valve) that opens with pressure, and it could be sticking??? Any of you chaps heard of anything like this??

I said earlier .....

"This noise could be from the power steering pump or steering box.

Don't rule that out."

These can make funny noises for no apparent reasons.
