We're picking up our L reg disco TDI on sunday, it's fine as far as I can tell - basically I'm far from expert but 90% sure it's a goodun.

Can or should I pop it into a garage for a service and look over - new oil kinda thing and look over for problems it's well in MOT and runs Ok, we had about a £2k budget and paid £1700 so technichally have a few quid spare to keep it ship shape.
OR should I buy a haynes manual ask on here and go over it myself looking for potential issues?
OR just run it for a month and see how it feels?
Bit vague kinda question just looking for pointers I suppose - I have been ghosting and reading the forum for a lil bit now.

basically, technically and issues all in one post!! yer doing fine young man

Seemed like a fair question to me !!!!

Mine is being delivered on Tue....Thinking the same sort of thing..

117k miles with FSH but last one at 109k miles...

I usually check all the oils/fluids and change em unless I know for definite they've been done very recently. While you're there have a good look for any leaks and if you find any check that bit a bit more often until you know it's not ****ing out. Have a look round for any loose or obviously broken bits. Best way to get a feel for what a Land Rover is like is to drive it! Just keep checking everything frequently for the first few weeks until you get to know how it's behaving. It'll soon tell you if it needs something;)

I think yer upset im slob!
NO! not me am was just pointing out the misuse of wurds ... basically usually mean the narrator is about to go into an indepth description.... technically got money left, wtf do that mean.. either you got dosh or you dint! thurs fook all technical about it........ and issues or did he really mean tissues?

There's a lot of work to check the car over for things that could wear and be a potenial problem. I would take it into a garage who know about Land Rovers and ask them to do a full service including a health check, looking at the drive train, suspension and steering, brakes, axles etc etc. It will cost a few bob but the rest of your ownership should be DIY hopefully.

Regards

I did say it would cost a few bob and didn't suggest going to a main dealer. My last main service (24,000) at a main dealer back in 2000 cost me £720, never again. It's been DIY since then.

Still a good independant LR garage would know what is what and could advise.

Regards

Thanks for the replies,
Sorry if my 1st post was a bit garbled, had been trying a few different ales last nite.

So I think I'm going to go over it and check for any obvious issues that I may have missed, the guys a good seller off e-bay (sold cars and other stuff before) and went round and answered all our questions offered me a test drive pointed out the few rust spots and mucky patches on the interior. Then I'll check the fluids and check the brakes. The cambelt was replaced recently on it.

Then drive it for a week or 2 get a feel for it and see if I can sense any problems. I'm realy hoping to learn and DIY as much as I can, always wanted to really get to grips with a car and maintain it myself as much as possible but never really had the chance till now.

Going to hold onto the 'spare' cash and ear mark it for clearing up any problems.

How often should they be full serviced in a garage?

its no good just checking the fluids unless you have a viscosity meter. you need to replace all the fluids including diffs, g/box, brake, clutch. that way you will know they will not break down. how do you know the cambelt was done, do you have a receipt or did the bloke tell you. to be honest, unless i had a receipt from a reputable garage, complete with the mileage on it then i would change it for my own peace of mind

As disco says above + don't bother with the Haynes manual but download the Rave CD (factory workshop manual) from on here or spend 99p on one off ebay as I did. A quick easy pointer as to wether or not the cambelt may have been changed is to have a look at the front of the engine to see if a new gasket/sealer has been fitted to either the front cover or the water pump, but it is still worth replacing if no receipt for the work is offered with any documentation that may come with the 200.

Yella said it all, for peace of mind change all the oils & coolant that's the easy part unless u have an auto box.. Cambelt, as with all cars that have a cambelt change when the manufacture recommends. Their was a prob with the 300 in that that pullys didn't line up which caursed premature failure. It should have been done under warranty by now. I sure a tdi owner can tell u more about that.

Well don't worry, there will be plenty of that owning a landrover!:D

Cheers folks

Got a reciept for the cambelt, so think that Ok. Will have a look on e-bay for the CD (hope it'll work with linux) is haynes not as good or just not worth the money in comparison?

Will look get onto changing the fluids for peace of mind asap.

Here's a link to the item on e-bay
