My wife is pestering to be allowed to take my new (old) defender out as much as possible

Apart from not wanting her smelling of oil and petrol and the fact it'll be like a gladiator's chariot in the car parks (on my insurance) what excuses can I give, other than I'm concerned it'll break down and leave her stranded! (I'm a true gent!)

The technical sections of the forum are for technical matters.
That's why I suggested you should ask in Anything Goes. :)

Do you still have a wife?

I think mine thinks i bought it for her

Yes I do thanks and she doesn’t drive my LR :)

Take the spring off the clutch pedal and the belt of the PAS so it’s extra heavy and then let her drive it, she will soon change her mind.

Or just trust that your wife won’t crash it.

If you don’t want her to drive it then have that conversation, if you don’t really mind then what’s the point of this thread?

Just tell her she's banned cos it's a propper mans vehicle and doris's are not capable of driving such a vehicle.
Might be an idea to enrole on a self defence course first.

Let her drive it. Normal rules of “bend it you mend it”
Then remember where she throws the spanners so you can retrieve later once out of your comfy seat

Thing is................. if she's not allowed to drive it and you spend a bunch of money and time on it, she will hate it.

Rock and a hard place:oops:

Let her drive it and learn it isnt for everybody:). Or love it too. then you can get a his & hers and free rein with the cost of yours. Win win:D

Don't worry about it. Let her drive. If it breaks down its broken down.

My wife uses mine when her 2015 golf is broken. She does 2 hours of driving a day with country lanes and motorway. Normally take the insa turbos off it for her tho. They call her Vera and play the sound track when she's got it

In her works carpark a lorry broke down blocking them all in. She just went up the curb and up a grass verge to get out.

She'll send pictures to her friends of it aswell.

my mrs. bought 'our' Ninety, it was a non-runner so couldnt be test-driven;)

she'd always wanted one (we already have a pair of 3 door 200tdi Disco's so she's 'driven' landeeeeees....)

one cambelt later then mot...

aparently power-steering is needed as is removing the spare wheel from the bonnet (cos she's only short:D)

and obviously the theft risk is now a concern & how do you value an '86 Ninety (tul, ffw) thats still got its origonal chassis & bulkhead that hav'nt been OR dont need weldingo_O

does get agreed value classic insurance though:cool:

so, in conclusion, shes probably only driven it ~ 5 times locally and has no intrest untill I fit a 200tdi engine & pas to make it 'drivable':p

@Mdc124 , really...just let her drive it and enjoy the new share between you. It's amazing the brownie points gained when sharing our p&j's with the wives...psychology a woman thinks this is a great trust, her man letting her drive his tratter and she'll love you all the more for it. If she dings it, 1. she pays for it, 2. it's only a car...pieces of metal that can always be repaired.

Caveate: only let her drive it if she's NOT the uber mental mumsnet with zero mechanical sympathy type of snake with tits...you know the type;)
