hi everyone , i was wondering if anyone uses a diesel fuel additive to help keep the injectors clean ?

recently, i posted a problem with my 2001 td4 ( 70k miles ) having really wobbly tickover problems,,,,, anyways after checking everything i possibly could and with the help from others on here , i eventuall traced it to a bad injector,,,,,,,, when i pulled off the lead to no 2 injector , it made no difference at tickover speed.( effectivly running on 3 cylnders and smoking a lot)

my daily journeys are 5 mile runs , and i think this is contributing to the problem, , i removed the exhaust and the cat was looking 50% chocked with soot ,so i cut the cat material out , this has certainly allowed the engine to breathe more freely,
i then added a bottle of injector cleaner to a full tank of fuel and ran it almost empty taking it for several long runs down the motorway, now on the 2nd tank of fuel this has improved the tickover and the engine is running great,

1, has anyone had this problem when doing short journeys
2, dose anyone use a diesel additive on a regular basis
3, which additive is recommended for regulary use

( injectors are £190.00 each )and not the easiest things to remove

this may be of some help to someone

looks like yer sorted it John t. . . . .i tend to agree er little wiff wot you say , but better still ,slap a litre er asdas cheepest cooking oil in tank [yes jist pour i in] it will do a better job than any additive you can buy un keep yer injectors tickaty boo. . . .oh un just ta scare the pants of all doozle peeps, after 10k miles yer wont get your injectors out, as the carbon build up will stop them comin out , un no additives can cure that one. . . . .:)

Doing constant short journeys is the quickest way to kill an engine. Go for a long run (40mins +) at leat once a week, and yes, put in injector cleaner from time to time, but nothing beats getting the engine up to proper temp and giving it a good blast for a continued period.

im liking the idea about the cooking oil, how often do you add it to your tank , works out cheaper than diesel,,,,

If you wanna use a good additive, use Lucas upper cylinder cleaner. Small bottle is £5.99, use one of them a month, really gud stuff. Just used it in wifes TD4, runs a treat now, much quiter. It will take a few bottles to get all the crud out, but it really does work. I bought a liter bottle at the Lucas stand at the Autosports show at the NEC in January, I have used the bottle between the wife`s TD4 and my own 2.0ltr 190E. They both run bob on now.

Hi,

When I had a job close to home and was running only 10 miles a day I was using Millers Diesel additive as per instructions on the bottle.

Now I'm adding Halford's cheapy 2-stroke in ratio 200:1 all the time, with a bottle of Wynns Injector cleaner twice a year.

I like the price tag with Asda's cheapest cooking oil (Lidl is even cheaper) but I'm scared by all the reports of 'gumming up the works'.

If I was Captain of some inter-gallactic star-ship I might have a go, but us normal earthlings "no tienen cajones adicionales" for such things.

This earthling anyway. :p

The EGR creates a load of extra crud on short, low-speed, low-temperature journeys too, so either clean it and disable it, or preferably get a by-pass.

Singvogel.
