Freelander 1 Shift from D to N?

Hi all,

For these older autoboxes (2004) is it beneficial to switch to N when stopped or stay in D with the brake pedal on?

I feel like in my mind D and braking would cause harm overtime but I don’t know much about autoboxes.

Theoretically leaving it in drive causes less clutch wear than selecting D each time you want to pull away.

Yes. If you want to start the engine without it being in park, like when maintenance is being carried out. Also you need N to disconnect the drive, before reverse is selected.

Moving from D to N reduces the heat generated in yer auto when stationary. There's a certain amount of drag when it's in drive. I always took my FL1 out of D if stationary for more than 10 seconds.

Braking in D is ok. It will reduce the engine rev's to assist braking.

They vary the fluid pressure depending on what it's doing so there will be a reduced drag. I would expect pressure to drop while stationary. It won't actually move to neutral like some more modern boxes do. LR don't seem to focus on it with the FL1 but other manufacturers who use the same JF506E feature it more in their write ups. LR do on the later FL2 where they made some changes to enhance it to further reduce drag over the earlier FL2 auto.
