So I don't know how normal this is, but my 300Tdi really has some large vibrations when I start it up and turn it off. When I turn it off it seems to stop very quickly if you know what I mean and it shudders so much my bonnet rattles on the wing tops. It's a '98 so I don't know if the engine mounts are on there way or something. Any ideas?

Get someone to start it whilst you look at engine with bonnet raised

Is the engine moving significantly or just a rattly component like the air filter?

Mine used to do the same, shook when turning off and clattered.
I changed the engine mountings when I changed the chassis, made a small difference, turned out to be the fuel cut off solenoid, now I've replaced that it's fine.

So looking at it I would say it's probably the air filter. Does that sond plausible? The fuel pump looks like it moves quite a bit though. I have a video but I don't know how to upload it to here.

Sounds about right actually. I will look in to getting a new one of them!

My air filter sometimes moves and can at times make some odd noises depending on what it knocks against

If it is the air filter, you shouldn't have any real movement on the suspension

I think it's the air filter then. You can feel a shudder from inside but it doesn't really rock the suspension. Is there an easy way to tighten the air filter up then?

Not sure how your air filter can be causing your bonnet to shake like that.
Anyway, took my engine out a few weeks ago and noticed the air filter mounting is on about three little rubber bushes. Two of mine were sheared through, so it must have been quite loose. Not a sign of vibration from it though!

Not sure if you've sorted this AJ, but thought I would put a picture on for you of my broken air filter retaining rings. They are connected by 4 rubber bushes. three of mine were broken, but I didn't know until I took the engine out.
Even just being held on by one bush, my filter box did not shake like yours.
The second picture shows the other filter box support ring resting approximately where it belongs.

I haven't fixed it yet unfortunately. I am busy with exams at the moment. Thanks very much for those pictures though. I will have a look and see if mine have sheared off as well. It is strange that yours didn't shake though, especially as 75% of it's supports no longer existed!

Thanks, and I think you are right. I just checked the air box and all mounts are correct and accounted for. If I rock the air filter it does move but I think that's just due to the type of mounts, not due to a problem. Hmmm, the search continues.

Thanks for all your suggestions, guys. It turned out the arm that holds the bonnet up had dropped a tad as the holder was bent a bit. I bent it back up and now it no longer hits the air box when it starts and stops.

Could also be gearbox mounts as they tend to get overlooked mite be worth checking :)
