OK, new filters, engine oil change etc done today. Didn't get the ****part ones in the end, got set of three filters and new belts from Andrew Page's (Mann filters). Last week ran a tank of Wynn's injector cleaner through it, and did the Wynn's engine flush before changing oil today, all new filters fitted, filled up with some V-Power Diesel, and she's a different motor - quiet, responsive and much more smooth to drive. Anyhoo, a coupla observations...

1. Removed Air filter and there was quite a lot of oil inside the casing, dripping all over the place. Is this normal, or should ah disconnect the crank case breather?

2. Fluid leak evident from somewhere, seems like diesel by the smell, but going to investigate further. Is wettest around where the vacuum pipe from the servo attaches to the engine.

3. Both belts completely knackered and being replaced tomorrow which could explain the heavy steering and warm running of late ;)

How about experimenting with the breather bit, seeing as how you've got a new filter clean all the oil out of the filter housing bung it all back together as standard an check the housing for oil every couple of weeks or so. Yer see I've got a theory that as the filter gets more clogged with ****e the oil mist can't get through it as easily, an so collects in the filter housing instead of being burnt off. I was going to do this myself when I got round to changing the filter.

The oil mist MUST NOT be directed through the air filter or the paper will get clogged up in no time and the air won't get through. It is most important that the air filter element is DRY (no water) and not oiled-up.

The fumes from the breather MUST be sent into the airstream AFTER ther paper element, and because the element introduced a slight depression (suck) the fumes will head away from the paper element and towards the engine where they will be consumed.

Ah gave it a reet good clean out, didn't do anything to the hose though, might take this off and clean it as well.
Had the same problem with oil gettin' tae the air filter. was told it was the cyclone breather (part no. ERR1471)

Cleaned it out and was still the same, was then told there's a diaphram thingy inside and it could be burst, so just went and bought a new one.
Ye could try a Google search on the part no. for prices. Fitting's dead easy too;) :D
