hello everybody,

I am new to the forum. Registered today.
I bought a used Discovery TdI 300 , diesel , automatic. It was almost 100.000 Km (997056)and I do not have it´s service history.
I need an advice on what to do now. I am driving it for almost 2 weeks and it sounds good but I am getting the CHECK ENGINE light flashing from time to time and while doing so the car seems to loose some power.
Has someone an idea about this?
I am thinking about a general service but first I wanto to hear from you people.
I will come next time with more questions.

Welcome to the funny farm. Presume you have checked oil, water, all other fluids. Filters might need changing.You can do all those yourself but someone might come along on here to give a bit better advice than me.
 
Hi Manuel, welcome to the forum.

I have the same car. Mine is a 1998 version, but auto and diesel like yours.

If you cannot get the service history my advice would be to get some oils and filters and make a new start.

The priority will be to make the engine run as eficient as possible in terms of performance and fuel economy.

You will need:

1. One set of filters, can be ordered over the internet from here: FILTERKIT8 Filter Kit - Disco 300TDI

2. Good quality engine oil, 7 ltrs, 10w-40 or 50;

After changing the engine and all the filters, see if the engine check light still comes on. If it does, then we can look further.

hi guys

thank u very much for the help .
but i had a bad luck because befor i could do anything i tried to a have a real test drive abd i got trapped.
I was driving for about 20 minutes and i noticed the temp gauge going to red and before i could stpo the car the engine died away.
Anyway i opened tthe boot only to see that all the coolant had escaped from the coolant tank.
The engine was very hot and it could not start. I letf it to cool down and after an hour it started but with too much smoke on the pipe.
I called a tech and he suspect the head gasket is gone as well as the pistons.
Anyway he will make a diagnostic and i will let you know.

I have changed all the filters and timing belt. Also the timing belt bearings were changed
But i still get the "check engine " light coming on along with a sligth loss of power.

It happens mostly in lower speed.
Also i have noticed that the rpm indicator is not steady , sometimes will not leave the home position .

Can u please tell me something about ?

Hi Manuel, the first thing that comes to mind is to check the alternator electrical connections. There is a single wire on the back of the alternator that feeds the rev counter and sometimes this wire becomes loose or is even broken.

So, my advice would be to check all the electrical connections on the back of the alternator, make good if neccesary and see if that improves things.

What year is your Disco? Does it have an EGR valve - does it have a cat in the exhaust downpipe??

I will do a nice check on it tommorow. But yes i think there is an EGR valve on it. What does it stand for? as for the rest i will have a good kook and i will come back to you.

Hi Manuel, just got back from a motorcycle trip in the mountains and saw your post.

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation and, as it's name implies, recirculates exhausts gases under certain conditions, the objective being to improve exhaust pollution.

It was a poor solution from the outset and most owners agree that the best thing to do is just get rid of it, using a kit like this:

Land Rover Defender 300TDi EGR Blanking Kit + Hose on eBay, also, Land Rover, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 08-Aug-08 21:18:39 BST)

Once fitted you should find a slight increase in performance - I noticed on mine it would go up hills better and a slight improvement in fuel economy.

Once that is done, the next job I would reccomend is to remove the catalytic converter from the exhaust system. This is done easily and cheaply (£21.25plus tax) by changing the exhaust downpipe for one from a Defender.

You can buy one in England from the people and they will ship it to you.

Hi Dave,

Seems I found a 2nd father.
As I am at the office know i just went out to parking lot and had a look at this wire at the back of the alternator.
I fact it was like a bit loose. I refitted it and started the engine and then drove for a while.The Rev looks fine now ,very steady.
Thank you very much. I was so worried because I had the "Check Engine" light .
I had a hint aboyt thet too. It´s about the diesel tank cap. I tried to close it very well yesterday and until now no sign of the Light. It may work....
I will email you to discuss the EGR issue after i come back from my trip to South Africa .I am living sunday and back on the next saturday.
