Yes that's a very good point, but this will all be evident in oil condition anyway.

will do the autobox next year and drain some off first , don't know if the ATF has ever been changed

they do a filter and sump conversion , but seems the filters remain very clean

Had mine 3 months & done 5k already! last service stamp by the garage i bought it from was done at 102k miles in January (belts & major service done at 98k), now on 109k & service indicator came up yesterday saying 30 days. Confusing, either garage didnt service or they didnt re-set the service indicator. So i'll get it serviced now to be safe. I'd change engine oil every 8k anyway.
I'm also contemplating a gearbox oil change / flush. Still undecided which is the safest option.

hi mate

also all my belts done , had been already done in the past but nothing had been written down in the service schedule , so front belts and tensioners , updated oil pump casing , water pump and also the infamous rear belt , done at 98,000 miles

mines a 2005 and know the 2007 are reknowned for breaking oil pump casings

think u can reset the service indicator urself by the dashboard , but not 100%

have seen many people getting the gearbox flushed, think it costs around £3-400 quid , not including the sump and filter upgrade , i'm just going to drain and fill with new atf

in a few weeks time i'm going to get my gearbox software updated , clear the adaptive first then reflash it , will take out the slight delay on the box, don't know if urs is the same

seems a common problem , feels like there's slack in the drive , this adaptive reflash is suppose to remove it

Hi mate,
ummm...no mention of the oilpump upgrade being done whilst the belts were done on mine. Might have to put a call into Preesall 4x4 to check. It does seem to be '07 that suffer most as you say but does make me a little nervous.
I might check the level & oil condition in my box before deciding on a full flush. I'd rather do it sooner whilst the box is behaving. I did read that gearbox ecu flash on disco3. I can get a bit of a clunk / slack when say, slowing down for a moment then hitting the throttle.
So far though just changed all pads & disks. New tyres for the back. Waxoiled the underside, fitted a reversing camera (£20.00 from ebay) & connected up to my sat nav screen. Still get intermittent reverse sensors failing but camera is much better anyway. & this morning cleaned up my gunky MAP sensor.:)

Ive always done 5k or yearly oil changes, but my 90 only did 321 miles between last two mots, so oil change has been deferred for another year as its still clean.

does seem very common and worth getting the oil pump casing checked , got mixed views regarding the full flush , mainly the money , lol

that's it ref the gearbox as u take up the drive, able to do it myself by the gap iid , that has been a lifesaver
have u also got the same diagnostics reader ,

got the pleasure of a few more bits i've got to do

remove rear bumper and replace parking sensor loom
front struts , either a leak or replace
replace rear upper wishbones
fit a new spare wheel winch with anti theft one and fit spare wheel

then going to fit new discs and pads all round already done all new tyres, cooper at/3
started spraying the underside with dinotrol

really enjoying working on it, seeing it was abit if a bucket when i bought it, new compressor , valves, curtain airbags etc

Sounds like youve been busy!
Think i need a new spare wheel winch as mine looks like it's about to fall apart. May go for the anti theft cover although my spare is only a steel.
I dont have any diagnostics yet. Thought i'd dropped on when i found a icarsoft diagnostics reader pouch under the passenger seat when first cleaning it out but nothing inside :(. Whats the best reader you recon?

Carssoft will read all you faults and live data ie injector balance and so on, but it cannot reprogramme like the Gap IID tool can, but the carsoft is a 1/4 of the price.

I nearly bought a D3 but didn't, due to... paranoia. Having had so many problems with my D2, i thought i could be buying myself into a whole new world of expensive problems. So, i got another D2. Brand new gearbox fitted by Land Rover 30,000 miles ago, i've had it 3 months - torque converter buggered!! I love land rovers but my opinion is becoming jaded. Should we really have to constantly worry about a major catastrophic engine or gearbox failure? I dont mind silly bits going wrong which take an afternoons tinkering to fix, even on a regular basis but for example, i paid £2000 for my last D2 and have spent about £3600 to keep it going. Its now sitting on my drive with yet another failed gearbox, hence the newer one, now sitting on the drive with a knackered TC and a minimum £500 bill to fix. I'm not sure i can take any more financially. I will fix it and live in hope. But if it breaks down again, i'm getting a donkey.

i got a full size spare wheel for mine , however i had some spare 18 mm exterior plywood and used it for the anti theft device , know if doesn't look pretty , but is practical and will take some to get through it once bolted underneath the landy , at least it will slow them down if they want to pinch the spare

new winch also has a metal sleeving to protect the spring and wire from being cut

reader , best out there is iid made by gap, £420 , but seeing land rover will charge u £120 each time is well worth the money , can do nearly the same as a T4

hi mate

funny enough been talking to Pat about that , going to get the gearbox reflashed in a few weeks

been working on my laptop today as it was seriously slow, but hopefully now and fingers crossed i can use it to update the iid , got to clear the adaption on the gearbox first prior to the software flash

what is urs like now after a few weeks of being done , has it made a little difference or a lot :D:D

understand where ur coming from, i did wonder as i drove my new D 3 home for the first time, shall i get my brain testing , then thought well in for a penny in for a pound, lol

all i can do is look after it, servicing on regular intervals and ensuring when i see things to resolve them straight away, in return and fingers crossed will in return remain reliable and carry on doing the things i bought it for

would adore to own a disco 4, maybe when i've finished this i may be able to get another project but in a D4 , lol

however with stories of snapped crankshafts and failed oil pump covers it does tend to leave a sour taste in the mouth and can lead towards another manufacturer

Yes its still much better to drive, every now and then I can catch it out, whereas as before it happened multiple times per journey, but its basically a 100 percent improvement on how it drives and well worth the 25 quid.

I often have people ask me about my D3, usual questions what do they drive like/mpg etc etc
I am always very reluctant to recommend one as I know most people cant afford to run a normal car let alone a potentially high maintenance 4x4.
As a mech I see the cambelt job as 200 quid in bits plus my time, most people thats 5/600 quid, PLUS the oil pump if needed.

Ive now got a tinkly offside cambelt tensioner, and the whole cambelt plus rocker cover and the camshafts has to come out to replace the tensioner, again 200 quid in parts (only need to replace cambelt as everything else new 20k ago) and my time, normal joe got to be 500 quid plus any cambelt parts as well as there will be some sort pf warranty.
