Hello everyone

I have a question regarding service history.

I went to have a look at a Range Rover 1998 4.6, I thought I had found the right one for me but a couple of niggles in that it had the wrong colour interior and there was a small split on the rear quarter panel, but I was looking over the service history and the lady who had the car before down in London had paid nearly 3k  for a full service from a Land Rover stealer, it was nearly 3 pages long involving changing the cams, all the belts and pulleys etc various other work, and then 3 months later a similar service was done again with the similar items being changed at a further 2.5k bill, In fact within a space of 12 months this lady had spent 8k in service bills. Would you think there was an underlying problem somewhere with the engine:confused:

Any advice would be appreciated as I am still waiting for my ideal Range Rover to come along.:D

Matt

A snap answer; gullibility of previous owner linked to devious greedy
stealer ?
£8K should buy a new engine & tranny complete!!
She must have been a millionaire.

Thanks Mr Teddy Bear

If I come across one in the future with alot of money spent on the engine for similar work etc would you consider this to be safe to buy? I agree with the amount spent as she could of bought a new engine etc I would say the previous owner was fairly wealthy and didn't really understand what was a fair price. The mileage was good aswell considering the year.

Matt

There is no concise answer to that.
Bear in mind the friday afternoon vehicle calamity theory ?
Depends on your ability to understand to technical aspects of MV Engineering?
I bought the 'Haynes How To Buy A Landrover Guide' a month or so back while I was at the Museum withthe MBO Forum crowd.
I have to say at the risk of attracting more flak that if I had done more research on the NET before buying I might have thought better of it.
Only time will tel on that score however.
You at least need to book simple failurers such as all indicators on one side
the abs light remaining lit passenger side footwell always hot can beexpensive to retify.
Very Nice vehicle when their running right (12-22mpg) complex and expensive to repair when their not.

Thanks again for the info, I have looked at quite a few over the last few weeks and alot of them have had the ABS light still lit so I will certainly bear this in mind.

I don't mind doing quite a bit of work on the car myself as I enjoy it, just like most people you don't want to end up breaking the bank paying for it as it can take a bit of frustration out of owning these cars.

I intend on getting it converted to LPG aswell, as I have someone who is qualified lpg engineer who can do it very reasonable.

so how much was it?? give me her number, i would take it like a shot, seems like that fixed it now?? did you test drive it?

Lookat www.rangerover.net

looks very good
ps if anybody (sensible that is) knows how to depressurise the EAS without
TESTBOOK or one of its clones could you please tell ?
I bought the Wk Sp Manual fm Paddocks they require a lot of servicing...
Pneumatic systems don't keep working with out regular maintenance for instance.

Cheers Dopey

It was 4.5k for the car, I haven't gone back yet for a test drive as we were unsure of also the split on the rear quarter panel, it sounded different when you tapped it to the other panels and was white underneath it as if it was body filler. What do you think?

Matt

Sounds like its had a shunt? take someone with you, get them to stand behind the car as you drive it off, if it dose a little shimmy (like a ducks wiggle) at the back then the chassis is twisted (walk away) you’ll spend more than its worth fixing it, tell her about the filler (she probably already knows) and get a bit more ££ off the car, nothing wrong with filler, as long as its not too thick and the panel was beaten out, and the jobs a good’un, it all depends on how much the car is when you beat her down to rock bottom, then you’ll have some ££ to fix it up a little, but if she has spent that much on the engine, and you have no warning lights on in the dash, then i wouldn’t mind taking the risk, after all you can sell it on after and get your ££ back on it, so its not a loss is it?

Many thanks for the advice, I'll go and have another look at it. Its just a shame for my personal view that it hasn't got cream leather interior, you know when you have the picture in your mind on how you want your Range Rover to be and it's just not there, without having to do too much alterations but beggars can't be choosers!!!

beggars can't be choosers!!!

They can! why buy what you don't want?

Keep searching and you'll find the right car.

As for the service costs, she was ripped off big style but at least most of it's new!

I suspect the rear quarter panel is full of filler. If the chassis is bent, they dont always "shimmy" when pulling away, plus, to bend the chassis on one of these, it would have been written off as you have to hit them real hard to bend the chassis so the body would have suffered in a big way. Do an HPI check.

Theres loads out there, don't accept second best, it took me around 7mths to find what I wanted.
John

Thanks Clutchdust, I think you maybe right and I'll keep searching for the Range Rover I want. I have certainly seen quite a few without any body filler in them too. I did see the HPI check for it and it was ok no adverse history to it.

I'll keep hunting...
