The service engine light on my '93 4.2 LSE came on the other day on the way to work. I pulled over, looked for a code (there was none) and then checked my owners manual. It stated that if the light came on while the ignition was on, it indicated an emissions issue and to contact the dealer. Yeh, right.
So I went afield into the interwebz to find out about my issue and found that the relay can be reset to get the light to go off. On the classic the relay is under the passenger seat. It is about the size of a pack if cigarettes cut in half. It is brown and stated upon it in the Queen's English is that it is an Emission Reminder Relay. It can be unclipped and removed. There is a paper label on top and that label covers a small hole into which you place a very small screwdriver to make contact between two small electrical connections inside. On mine the hole was already there as the reset had been done before.
Anyway, it took me a bit to track down the solution and then find the relay so I thought I'd post it here for peeps in the future.
P38 owners with the same issue must have the light extinguished through connecting it to a computer, it seems.
