I've gotten stuck before trying to cross a mud pit that was about 1.5 times as long as my 109. I just need to be able to get across the mud well enough to continue my trail rides, I don't go looking for mud. Should I invest in a decent winch? Are there tires that would do well in mud but be good for off road and ice use? Or should I just learn to drive and try to make it over the mud in my 40 psi, hard as a rock, knobby tires.

speed and momentum for mud, unless it's too deep then the winch or passing JCB is the solution.:)

have a look here About.com: http://www.bayourovers.com/offroad.html#drive

the way to deal with mud is as stated above momentum you need to be billy big balls unless you have huge tall tyres saying that at runhall i was getting stuck even hitting mud flat out in 3rd (damn stupid plough i was towing)

What tires you got and (this may sound stupid but...)do you know how to use your 4wd?
I mostly got stuck in me series when the springs rested on summit hard and lifted the wheels.

nah 5ton test lifting strap (7:1 safety ratio) its harder than my rear x-member cause i bent that on the last snatch

Them was banned for use by a lot of operators offshore years ago, get them wet or covered in oil and they can only be used once, been chopping hundreds of them up since.........real shame!:)

not sure where that one came from but the ones i had in the back of me sIII were off a rig (not saying who opperates them begins wiff an H and has most of the rigs in the gulf and won the contract to rebuild iraq) and they still use them

Yep, Halliburton ones of the ones who say they don't use them other than for controlled lifts...............bugger did I say that out loud??:D

they offered me a job in aberdeen.Good straps but they do deteroate if not looked after properly, as with most things.micheal moore thinks theyre evil!

Corporate culpability.........stops all the fun these days, anyway before we get totally of topic for the youngun.........don't go out on your own, get a kinetic rope or steal a length of mooring line from a local fishing boat and get yourself a cum-along/tirfor........seems like plenty trees either side of your local back-wood roads....oh and practice with them when the weathers good, don't wait until an emergency occurs before you try and figure out how things work.

i agree never wait til its too late before testing how or if things work! like difflock if you don't use it the linkage siezes up and when you need it it wont play. a turfor is a wicked piece of kit if you can use one (not just lack of skill a lack of anchoring points will stop you) but thats the same with a winch
you can never have too much recovery kit! i always like to take 2 or 3 strops/ ropes, my high lift, 5 or 6 shackels, a spade, a bow saw, a hand axe, atleast 2 other people and a second landrover complete with the same kit

Have just been given a 30ft length of 40mm nylon rope that was destined to be a ships mooring line but never quite arrived. Used it to pull a stuck disco out the mud on Saturday. & the lad supervising/signalling to both drivers thought it was a kinetic rope when It started to stretch. he took several large steps back. To get even further away from it. :D :D wasn't till after the recovery & I showed it to him that he would believe it wasn't a kinetic. rope.

This has been used a few times already. It's a fooking beauty. got the same construction as my climbing ropes but 2"thick. gotta be about 20ton breaking strain at least.. :D
