Series III doors on Defender 110

I'm thinking of converting my 1994 110 station wagon to a convertible
(I live in the tropics) :p The air-con finally packed-up and it was
never that good anyway.

I've heard that Series III doors will fit on the 110. Can anyone
confirm this?

I want to use only the bottom half of the Series doors. On front and
rear (second row seats).

How about the rear (load space) door? Will the Series III (bottom half
only) fit?

My idea is to fit a full length roll cage with luggage rack (with
floor) bolted to the roll cage.

 
I have herd it the other way round that defender doors will fit a series 3
so the reverse must also be true, depending upon the locks, the older series
doors had the latch kind you might find on a domestic door.

The top half adds nothing to the strength or stability of the door except
notionally in a roll over

Yes, I've not done it yet but I've seen trucks with this mod done, a
Defender 90 was the most recent. He reckoned they just bolted
straight on although I'd suspect having to mess around with striker
plates for the locks at the very least. Lower doors are cheap, and
you could buy one in knackered condition and test it out to see if it
does what you want before getting more cosmetically pleasing ones.

Having converted my hard-top to a pick-up, if I were you I'd think
about making the roll-cage removable on the back, there have been a
few times when I've found removing the canvas and sticks to be very
useful indeed to fit large stuff in the back, so a full-length roll
cage might get in the way. Depends on your circumstances of course.

Yes - it's done quite a lot as they are (a *lot*) cheaper. You'll need
to change the keepers to SIII types, and the check strap arangement
will need to be modified. The hinges are the same - no problems there.

The same applies to the middle row doors.

I think you'll need a 90/110 tailgate, but the Series ones can probably
be used, though it may look odd.

My first 110 tailgate cost £5 at an autojumble, it was severly
cosmetically knackered, so I replaced it with a better one for the
princely sum of £15. So no real point messing about with series
tailgates.

series III rear door is a direct swap for an early 110 rear door, so I
reckon the split tailgate will be as well.
