Hello,

I'm the proud owner of my first Land Rover, a series 3 diesel. It's a real beauty, but being a novice I have some questions - I hope someone might answer this one for me:

When turning the vehicle off, I was told by the previous owner that I need to push a button which is on some sort of stalk just to the left of the steering column until it judders to a halt - is this correct or should the vehicle just turn off when the key is switched?

Thank you for your help!

:)

you were told correctly.
there is no electronic stop valve on the series vehicles. if you remove the key, the engine will still run.

Great - thank you for your replies, much appreciated! It was disconcerting to find that turning the key off would leave the engine ticking over!

Many thanks

E.

My series 3 diesel stops when I turn the key off so taffi isn't correct neather. (get it, Neather, Neath, Taffi....aw never mind.)

Thanks for this - but who is right?

If there is something wrong with the ignition, what is the most likely cause for it not turning off, and a rough estimate for repair?

Thanks for your swift responses.

E.

Series III diesel stops by pulling the stop cable on the steering column, turn the key to off and pull the button.

This is all very reassuring - it was rather alarming turning the key into the off position and have the car still running! It gives a real shudder when the stop cable finally kicks in and it grinds to a halt.

Still, it's a real gem of a Land Rover and these querky features (certainly by today's standards!) are part of its character.

Many thanks

E.

Old trucks are stopped by pulling a stop button.
It depends on the type of pump, older DPA pumps found on landys have a stop pull button, dont worry about it, even if its not original it works.
