Series III 88 won't roll, work tomorrow!

I was driving home and felt some resistance to acceleration as I pulled off from a light. I drove along a bit and noticed that whenever I needed to stop, in traffic, that the Land Rover would stop quite abruptly rather than rolling on a little as usual.

When I got home (shortly after) I stopped to open the gate but when I went to pull off again I felt major resistance, like the engine was fighting against obstruction, and could barely move it. It's never easy to push but putting it into neutral, handbrake off, and trying to push it it seems ironclad stuck. I've tried engaging and disengaging handbrake, overdrive, high range/low range etc all to no avail.

Advice very much appreciated as I need to get to work tomorrow morning!

jack it up and try spinning each wheel in turn. with handbrake off.

You could check the brake drums to see if ones noticeably hot, including handbrake drum..

Unless it was pulling to one side it's more likely to be a rear wheel, brake or bearing is most likely.

Seized diff? Were the brake drums hot? could it be a seized brake? brake master cylinder not releasing properly? Possibly seized transfer box. Last time I seized a rear diff the vehicle wouldn't move at all - had to remove rear propshaft and both driveshafts then drive it on the fronts. Also had a nut come loose on the master cylinder which prevented it returning properly so it kept the brakes locked on. Good luck!

Thanks all. Haven't tried jacking it up yet. I can put it in forward gear, and reverse, and move forward and back a bit- back seems a little easier but it doesn't want to go far- strong resistance- so I didn't push it.

My handbrake used to bind and cause resistance and the wheels to skip on corners. An immediate fix I backed the handbrake adjuster right off (so I had no handbrake at all). Thorough clean of expander bit had it fixed properly.

Drums don't stop as well in reverse.

Sounds like your shoes are binding ...

After letting it cool down it worked okay the next morning, so it does seem like something is sticking

Does the master cylinder push rod need adjusting

Try backing it off a couple of threads and see if that makes a noticable difference.
