Guys, are the brake pedal boxes in early defenders the same as those in series landy's?

I ask as i have the chance of an early defender pedal box/servo which would work much better with my series thats got disk brakes fitted and a rubbish servo.

i know i had a series 3 that had a defender brake servo on it, was bodged in by the previous owner though as the pipe unions on the new pedal box are all metric, and old landys were imperial, so the union was rammed in and tightened up, knackering the threads and wasnt a good seal!

Anyone else tried anything like this - reason i ask is that i have knackered SIII servo powering RRC disk brakes, and the braking is poor, when it should be very good. I could repair that SIII servo but i get the feeling a defender or RRC servowouldgive more oomph?

Usually when replacing a servo from one from a bigger car it's wise to also change the master cylinder to maintain a decent pedal, so I'm told!

If you're using a defender pedal setup then I can't see why it wouldnt work, the only issue I would think is that sometimes there's not enough 'throw' on the brake pedal to engage the brakes properly when swapping cylinders around,

As said keep an eye on the thread sizes but you should be able to make off new connectors or buy adapters to get around that.

For brake pipes the pipe diameter is the same for metric and imperial so you should be able to make up pipes with the appropriate connector on each end. The series manual has a guide to which flare is used for what connector.

The threads are very nearly the same size and pitch. M10 x 1 on left, 3/8" x 24 on right.

There is no reason why new brake lines can't be made with imperial at brake end and metric at master cyl end but DO ensure that you fix a permanant sticker that states this on the master cyl/servo.

did the pedal box itself line up with the bulkhead fixing hole's or did you have to re-drill the position
looking at fitting either a series 2/3 or defender pedal box in series 1

The bolts holes lined up fine but due to the larger size of the defender servo i had to cut a bit of the top of the wing away before it would fit in. Doesn't notice tho. I used an early defender servo (pre-300tdi) and was able to just connect the existing dual circuit series MC to it, very easy job and the brakes are much better now.

The 300tdi servos are a different shape (even bigger still) and would not couple to a series MC.

many thanks for the quick reply just to confirm the defender or series 2/3 will fit as I'm having the bulkhead made with series 2 pedal cut-outs and the necessary re-enforcing will fit a remote servo unit
