Hello,

I've got a series 3 with an sd1 v8 in it, it's been having a few electrical issues recently -

Kenlowe Fan stays on permanently
Main beam don't work
When sidelights are on the fuse gets very very hot
Reverse light comes on when it feels like it
Fuel Pump relay has lost its earth and lost its ignition feed

I've tried cleaning all the earths I can find and they are okay...

Any other ideas??

If you are still running with the original 4 way fuse set up below the steering wheel, take the fuses out and clean them and housings. It may also pay to drop the fuse holder and make sure all the spade connectors are tight. This may not cure your woes but will eliminate them from the list.

I replaced the fuse box in mine with a 4 slot blade type, still fitted in the hole under the steering column but much more reliable, plus fuses are easier to get in this format.

As for the Kenlow, I threw out my temp controlled switch as it was a joke and put a manual switch in it's place, until I was able to get a modern temp switch in the bottom hose.

As for main beam, and the lights in general, the series 3 as standard does not run relays, and this over time takes it's toll on the switches. Check feed to the main / dip switch (does the blue headlight indicator in the dash come on), earths at the lights end of things and for power there.

Good point Murtle, my series three is running relays on dip/main. It got through two dip switches in just over a year, no problems since relays fitted. The pattern switches are of very poor quality. I have also run a separate earth from the multi position earth point on the rad panel back to the battery, this was in desperation chasing a bad earth when I fitted halogen lamp conversion. Turned out to have 24 volt bulbs in a box marked 12 volt !
No harm in leaving the additional earth in place.
