Aye up all,

Series 3
Free wheeling hubs removed i can move the front axle bit with the hub nut on
in and out about half a inch.Is this the wheel bearings or something more
nasty..

Also I have required a grunting noise on accelleration after about 10 mins
of driving. When parked and I rev the engine there is no grunting
noise.Could this have something to do with my front wheel play..

If my Free Wheeling hubs are on 2 wd does the front diff and axles turn?

Has anyone any Ideas?

Thanks Adrian Ford

Sounds not to be right. Why have you removed the free-wheeling hubs?

Where is the noise coming from?

The front axles (half-shafts) and the diff and front prop-shaft are not
turned when the free wheeling hubs are disengaged (in 2WD mode).
That's what they mean by free-wheeling!

I think a bit of play is normal, but not that much! It could also be
the UJ in the halfshaft i suppose..
I'm not really clear in my head what should move about in the front
axle. I would have thought that you wouldnt be able to move the end of
the half shaf out much atall as it hits the back of the stub axle.
Irregardless of the condition of the bearings or UJ.

No. If the FWH's are in free mode then no drive should be transmitted
back through the diff and prop.
If you put it in 4WD with the hubs unlocked then the diff + prop would
turn, but that would be silly!

When I grab the front wheel and shake it there is about half an inch of play
so I decided to have a look and see if it was anything obvious.
About the same time i required the grunting sound and wondered if it was the
front diff, but if it doesn't move in 2WD fwh then it must be something
else..

I just thought the axle play might be causing the grunting noise in the
diff..
