A friend replaced his Defender transmission brake with an open disc
brake as he got fed up with it packing with mud. I don't think he
made it himself so I suspect there's a kit out there somewhere. It's
still cable operated.

Yes, I've seen the website - but can't remember what it is. Definitely a
commercial product.

:) I went green-laning (Walna Scar) just before it closed - at
one point I looked behind me to see my friend running down the
hill chasing his SIII 109, hanging onto the door for dear life
trying to jump in - fortunately he did and stopped it - but a bit
further and it would have been over the edge and down a *very*
steep hill into oblivion. Needless to say he hadn't set his
handbrake up properly, 'tho he managed to fix it within 10 minutes
after having stopped further up on a flat bit! In the same vein,
I overheated the hand brake on my P38 on the same trip and lost
all braking control with it - bit scary at the time given the
situation I was in, but that's another story!
