Hi Perhaps you can help me.

I am considering buying a non runner Series 3 diesel swb truck style Land Rover.

The fault is described as follows ' The car kept trying to start itself even without the keys in the ignition'.

Has anyone come across this problem before and can you offer any advice as to where to look to find the problem?

Thank you.

Steve

Many thanks for your response oxides. Your tip is a good place to start looking and hopefully I can fix it myself. Steve

Or possibly a stuck solenoid - try removing the thin wire (white and red) from the starter motor - if it keeps trying to start it's the solenoid and it's probably a new starter if not look at the ignition switch and adjacent wiring. Get a copy of the wiring diagram - available somewhere on here.

pleasant surprise, opened thread expecting it to be other way round!
depends how much the wiring has been butchered by others

i once had a 2.25 diesel i had to put a petrol solenoid on as well due to shaggged contacts on the diesel starter. had to alter the cabling for this too.

let us know if you get it or not!
