The owner's son seems to remember that it was left as a gift by the land rover...
I don't know anything else..
It remains to understand if it has a greater value or as a normal series 3

I would just treat it as a normal Series 3. It may be a copy, it may be a promotional vehicle that was left in Italy, as your friend says.
Whichever, it is old now, and probably need a good deal of money spent to bring it back to a usable condition.

Update, i've more informations:
The owners says that it was used for the demo car during the Camel Trophy ... maybe for a selection event.
He says he was left as a gift by the land rover.
How can I know if it's true?
Does it have a greater value?

With verifiable proof it might be worth more to someone interest in the Camel Trophy, but as a promo vehicle rather than one of the actual competition vehicles i doubt the premium would be great. Without that proof, I can't see any premium at all.

I would like to have a genuine competition series 3, but I couldn't afford one even if they existed. I'll just have to paint mine yellow :p

It may be of slightly more interest than any other Series 3 the same age, but whether that means it is worth a lot of money is questionable.
And the condition of the vehicle is very important, if it is in very poor condition, it may cost a lot to restore it to a condition an enthusiast would want to buy it.

And it is important to remember that the Camel Trophy was a promotional event, of interest mainly to Land Rover enthusiasts.
The vehicle is never going to have the value of a Vintage Racing Car, or anything like that.
