Getting to it at last!!

Will be using Vapormatic paint in landrover colours, blue and ivory.
Similar to Tractol or other agri paints. Cos its cheap, durable and easy to use and has a pretty good finish.
Will be spraying with a DeVilbiss FLG5 1.4 tip.

Here is what I`m up against;

As it stands, "original Landrover grey", in 1972???

Some great repairs by a previous owner, plate riveted to the underside of the bonnet and holes filled with silicone and painted over!
Dont think there was originally a bonnet mount there!

Ever seen anything like this?
Rear panel filled flush with corner post! And sticker painted AROUND!

"Nice" wing top repair. It will stay there till I get some to replace them.

Painted the door handles too!

The dash is actually nicer than it looks, I stripped it all out, painted etc. Walnut insert too!

Doors will be removed, striped and sprayed on the flat, will prob take off wings too.
Will post more as I take them.

Comments and advice welcome.

Changing the subject slightly, what do you think of those tyres? I've got a brand new set with the same pattern sat in the garage that I've been thinking of fitting.

I have to admit - i've seen worse ;) Although the blending of the end caps is a new one

The "smoothed" look was all the rage with the boy racers a couple of years back :D

The paint job isn't awful buddy, but I'm sure it will be looking a million times better once you're done with it!

PS. LOVING the walnut dash insert!

Right, a quick update..
I`m just doing bits of prep as I can as i`m still driving it!
Did a bit more sanding today and had another look at the rear pillars.
What do you think of this??

Looks like a trailer ding on the rear left, so instead of trying to straighten it they filled it, the guy must have been a plasterer! there is almost 10mm of filler in some spots!
then they filled out the other side to match!
What do you think?
I sort of think its too much trouble to put right, would need to take off the corners to do it right, if I do that what else do I find? Also can the old ally dome rivets still be got?

Still looking for a bonnet mount to covet the holes there.

i know exactly what you mean about the filler, the more i scrape, sand and nitro the more i find, the wings were the worste with about 2" of filler on each one, cant wait to see how it fits back on without it..... yours looks ok to me with a bit of sanding and some time spent preping and painting will be as good as new.... (well thats what i am hoping for)

just power washed it to get rid of any flaky paint & grime, did the under side too, kinda wish i hadnt!
my "sound" chassis doesnt look so good now! quite a bit of welding to do, will need a rear 1/4 with hangars before too long.

Finaly made a bit of space in the workshop for the landy.
And its to work on the hard top, 1 coat so far, looks like the top will cover well in 2, but the sides in 3.
A friend is sorting me out with some replacement pillars, they are off a 90 but should fit?
So far the biggest mistake is not masking the gutter just painting it in with the top!
I might strip it....

hi i used to work in a paint shop painting alloy tipping tralors and we used to have to use etching primer on bare alloy to provide a key for the paint .but that was a long time ago what are you doing just primer and top coat . hope to be doing something along the same lines soon .bit here and there so i can keep it rolling

well i striped the gutter! looks much better for it!
2 coats on the roof and 3 on the sides covered it well, no runs so far.
A friend is sorting some new pillars for me, off a defender, should fit???
Gonna order some ss bolts for the doors too.
Rear door, rear quaters sills done too!
Slow but getting there.
Will post pics asap!

Its hard work but it all pays off when the vehicle is transformed. I hate bogging (even more so on land rovers). lucky for me my latest land rover does not have much on it. and the body work fairly straight. Also learnt to keep away from dark colours in gloss.
