Hi everyone, having a nightmare starting my 2.5 diesel series three. The motor turns over ok and after spinning the motor probably 10 to 15 revolutions it fires up, runs for two or three seconds then dies. I had a feeling it might be the lift pump so I rebuilt it but the problem persists and is exactly the same. Anyone got any ideas? I've read about this cold start mechanism within the pump, is there a way of checking it is set up right? I only need it to run for 5 mins because I'm going to strip it, it's just almost impossible to strip it where it is.
Thanks
Ben :)

pump wont have a cold start ,glow plugs will need to be good in cold weather as will fuel system ,does lift pump pump good clean fuel with no air bubbles

It would seem like an air related problem, check the spill/return pipe for fractures/missing washers. Also look at your stop cable is it going off and staying off? I have seen stop cables that are a bit marginal on full movement.

If you only want to run it a few minutes then why not wind the fuel nut on the side to give it more fuel so it will run, you can always count turns and put it back after

Has the engine stop cable jammed somehow? This happens on my 2.25, on my it just about runs but won't rev at all until to you push it in!

Fuel filter?Air leak on pump? Pump timing, although it wouldn't go out unless moved or fault.
2.25 has no cold start on pump. 2.5 does.

Its a 2.5. they do have a cold start mechanism in the pump though dont they?

To the OP, will it fire up if you pump the pedal a bit, mine starts like that sometimes (takes longer than using the cold start though to fire up)

The 2.5 gives extra diesel when starting controlled by the governor in the pump.
You should not need to press the accelerator at all.
