Series 2A project impossible --- VERY pic heavy

just remember the harder a job is to do the more skills your gonna learn along the way and the beauty of doing a full rebuild by yourself is that nobody on earth will know that motor better than you keep going and youll get there in the end

I was wrong the other day saying 4 bolts left..... there were 7
Got 3 out tonight..... took me about 90 mins! only 4 left.... and one is the one thats stuck however the tub bodywork where it is is severely corroded so I think it might just rip and leave the bolt in ( had the dremel on it tonight so weakened it a bit before running out of grinding wheels so you never know...might snap.
I recon someone's been at these ones before since the 7/16`ths socket and spanner just spins on them....
Its taking a lot longer than I expected to get it apart, but every time I go to do it the wife or bairn or something else needs me..... I will get there eventually
Anyhow, better finish watching my film ( snatch - an all time classic lol ) and get some sleep..... docs tomorrow then hopefully last 3 bolts out and time to try and rip the last one out and lift the tub

just a thought if you can get a clear look at the head of the bolt and know the thread thickness my method of removeing rusted bolts is usualy to drill into the head of the bolt to weaken it
for instance if the bolt has an 8mm thread find the centre of the head and drill it at 7mm but make sure its centered well go as deep as the bolt head is thick then twist it off with the spanner
once the tub is off and out of the way carefully drill the rest of the bolt out useing the same drillbit as before then tap the hole out again and incase your wondering b&q do a little metric tap and dye set it looks ****ty and cheap but with a little care mine has lasted me over 2 years now and still not snapped any of them well worth the tenner for them
plus the big bonus if you get plenty of practice on the chassis doing this youll be **** hot at it when you come to the ineviatble engine stripdown and cleanup coz no doubt youll need these skills for removeing snapped manifold studs and such
since i learned how to do this word has gotten out and i get payed by local garages and mechanics between £15 and £20 to remove and retap one hole usualy in ford and vauxhall cylinder heads
just another thought the way the chassis dips in the middle of yours id be tempted to support it with a few blocks or something just till you get the bodywork off it keeping damage to a bare minimum and insuring your gonna keep all your toes believe me its hard work learning to walk again
ps if i bend the fellas arm enough i might be gettin me hands on the 88 truck cab that used to be on the last of the summer wine pretty soon

lol, 4 axle stands in the middle either side already had bad news this week from the consultant.... my knees are wrecked and my kneecap on one side dislocates randomly causing great pain....and the other ones on its way out as well - nevermind its all good fun lol

Thanks for the advice about taps ect, I cant get a drill at it but I might try removing other bits to get in ( ie the wheel lol ) - just being lazy tbh.
I have done a lot of tap/dye/helicoil work in the past on wireline tools for offshore so should be simple enough.....tempted to make captive nuts for reassembly tbh
A bit scared of the engine rebuild also.....nah what could possibly go wrong..... :doh: lol

i didnt know ure knees were as bad as mine wich happened due to a polish git without a licence on a forklift bout 5 yrs ago wearing an ipod he cut a corner in the loading bay and his string of 8 trailor trucks on the back cought me boot and ripped my knee out and dragged me for 50yds down the bay causeing a permanent cyst in my left knee wich if overworked gets inflamed hurts like hell and siezes up overnight and takes me a bloody good hour to get it moveing in the morning even after 5 yrs physio
its off the claim for that accident that im gonna get another series 3 after i had to sell becca (me landy) because i couldnt drive her due to a heavy clutch and no job = no money to run/store her but im comeing back
and the worst thing you can do is show the fookin engine your fear if you take something complex apart just do what i do and take stage fotos as you go with a digital camera just to double check yourself it really helps you wanna see the engine rebuild ive just done for the old guy across our street it was on a vauxhall vectra 2.0 dti
bottom end siezed so built a turbo engine round a standard diesel injection block its going in tomorrow
the old guy is a mechanic and semi retired due to sight and back problems so im mainly there to do his jobs while he concentrates on getting work in its doing quite well at the mo

forgot to mention the last of the summer landy ive not pushed for a sale out of him yet but its in cimilar condition to what yours was could i be cheeky and ask what you paid for yours just so i have a bit of an idea what to offer for this one

We ( Dad ) paid £206 on fleabay - a sneaky last 5 second bid and won
I dont have a clue what they are worth and Im sure a lot of folk get them cheaper ( especially sirus - Im sure he just spots one and tows it away before anyone notices lol )
We were happy with £200 tho, I realise most of its wrecked but the engine starts better than the majority of cars
We think its going to need about £3-4k thrown at it and realise you can buy one for that ready done.....takes the fun away tho dont it

my thoughts exactly rebuilding one of these is basic exiting pretty quick exept for the usual siezed bolts slowing us down with fun fun fun all the way and a major feeling of achievement at the end result with a vehicle that could probably outlast us beyond retirement (a faithful freind forever ) and £205 thats serious dirt cheap i wish id seen it first ive seen a few now that are in a lot worse shape than yours and the owners wanting no less than £400 for them id say youve got an absolute bargain mate wich the way you got it id take it as a sign of fate that you your dad and that landy were destined for this

Anyway, few bolts out and a few grinded off today was a good day - got the tub off
And we recon the chassis is in good as new condition bar a quick lick of paint and ready to go thru an MOT as well - heres some pics

I only just noticed this post.... that sucks! Hope it was a good claim....I unfortunately cant claim because its just the way I am - think my work is going to pay me off because they arnt interested in taking me back in a different role or on amended duties. Mind if I ask how you afford to live? We are getting some benefits ( which I really hate claiming but no choice ) but its not enough to really live on tbh. I have an interview on Tuesday with a career phsycologist and she will take my condition and all my experience into account and tell me what I am capable of doing job wise ( I have also applied to ILA for a grant to re-train in certain fields )
Even after my hour or 2 work today Im in absolute agony.... never mind....the tubs off

looks like you need a new chassis there fella might i suggest digging round here as while you were away someone had a chassis going spare the thread was called whats it worth he might still have it as to the last of the summer wine landy the owner wants 3 grand for it he can fook off its a project not a minter

Anyhow.... yeah chassis is 100% dead, tears like paper, unfortunately we arnt in a position just now to buy a new one however while we continue to remove parts it means plenty of time to renovate them
As stated before this is going to cost.....a lot - however a little a lot ie we have time and can just buy as we can afford bits - if nothing else at least it gives me some time away from the wife and bairn once a week or so lol

Now had you said last week I had a spare chassis sat on me front lawn.....just sold it. I had a chassis like that on me series 2a.....I ended up sweeping it up and tipping it out down the scrappys

Good on you for taking your time and doing it right though.

Depends what you consider as a lot...new galvanised chassis = £550. Most of the parts for the series landies are cheap...I would say though, when you renew anything with either a bush, bearing or seal on it, buy genuine.

What is the bulkhead, engine and box like?

lol, I just went out and amazingly it is the springs and the axle/drive shaft holding it together..... will have to get the rest off soon to take the strain off them.
On the plus side the axle looks solid except the axel cover and the springs MAY be salvagable - the diff ( I think ) looks ok as well.....knocked around everything with a crow bar and only the chassis fell apart lol

Nope, I don't mean a grand! We paid £550 for a galvanised chassis for our Series 2 we are completely rebuilding (not the one I usually post pictures on, a different one). Was about 2 years ago but surely they could not have gone up that much since then?
