Hey guys ive just purchased a series 2A ex. mod military ambulance on ebay last night and will be wanting to register it.

Being a bit heavier than the standard landrover, are there any issues with MOT etc that i have to consider? It needs a bit of welding and painting, couple of lights and some other odds n sods from what i can see but nothing major.

Ive got to arrange to pick it up now, which will be fun....

Its not going to be restored to looks like a military one, its already battered as it is!!!

But instead will be converted into an all terrain campervan / enduro bike transporter.

The mrs doesnt know ive bought it yet  so im going to be in trouble... ho hum

:welcome2:

Fraid i don't know the answer to your question but thought i'd say Hello and congrats on buying a Landie - i hope you survive telling the mrs so that you actually can go pick her up :)

Congratulations and welcome to the forum.

Theres a lot of peeps here with plenty of experience of landys.

We expect photo's once you've got it.

well done on a quiality purchase
i got mine mid last year also from ebay
mot is nothing diffrent from normal car class test and should be able to skim over a few thing for the test
its a never ending list of jobs to get them up to good condition but all the parts are avalible and not at big money

good luck and have fun with it

I have a Marshal military ambulance. I bought it already converted to a camper:

The woodwork needs tidying up a bit and the cushions need to be reupholstered, but not bad for £500 I thought. New chassis and bulkhead on it too. Just wish I had the time to finish it off:mad: I wander what they are like greenlaning? Should be entertaining I think . . . Cushions, cutlery, crockery, pots and pans flying all over the place!

Ha, thats a really funny thought, greenlaning in an ambulance.... that blue amby looks really tasty pobby... makes me want to get one now, they come up all the time on ebay.. somewhere in york i seem to remember. Good luck with the conversion, it's a lot of fun, if the misses lets you have the time with it.. try make her interested.....

she looks good fenby but a bit clutterd
im planing on putting kitchen down the off side and bed down the near side
mine only get used for fishing bugger taking it greenlaning bit wide, bit unwheeledy and a really bad decent angle

Agreed... If I was starting from scratch I would do it differently, but it seems a shame to go chopping it about because the crafsmanship is so good. The chap I bought it off used it to tow his hillclimb car to events. The whole family of 3 children and 2 adults would squeeze in there (the baby in the capboard!) I think I would be happy enough with the standard stretchers and a camping stove, that way it could be used as a van too.

I will be taking mine greenlaning when I finaly get some time to finish it. I reckon that an otherwise easy greenlaning trip could turn into
a real adventure with an ambulance! Future plans for mine are to fit 110 axles, 300Tdi engine and R380 gearbox.

lol thats not a bad idea as it goes
cant imagine squeezing 5 in the that would be cramped as hell but each to there own
cant blame you for leaving it as it is once its done might as well leave it

Im planning on taking mine to either south africa (to go to her home town) or russia... (as its just somewhere i have never been) and so will be doing a campervan esque conversion whilst hopefully keeping the weight down. Its also to be used to transport my many motorbikes (too many apparently) around so ill be ripping out the stretcher beds and installing a sort of fold out double bed. Dont need a sink or a stove, im happy with a bottle of water and a petrol camping stove :) better than cold beans and a wash in the river

Ill be taking it offroading, never done it in a "car" but race enduros and .. well i suspect there will be little to take across from one to the other... what i lack in skill i make up for in bravery

how hard can it be, i mean... theres twice as many wheels for a start! so in my limited mentality.. that means

hardness / 2 = 1/2 as hard :D

Still not even seen this ambulance yet lol, but is the rear structure pretty solid?

Ive also been told to "make it more comfortable" or she isnt even getting in it! hahaha

more comfortable you will be lucky lol
everytime i go over a speed hump even at 5mph everything in the back jump
the rear spring are rock hard so you will feel every lump in the road and lets face it there are plenty of them these days

The rear body looks pretty solid to me - I think it would keep it's shape much better than a normal Land-Rover in a roll. But on the other hand it's more top heavy so more likely to roll!

Just tell her it came fitted with solid wood seats as standard, but just to keep her happy, you've upgraded to special foam filled vinyl seats.

lol it sounds like my present pickup that does, springs dont compress at all until you get half a tonne of crap in the back. i think ive lost a few inches (in height!!) since ive had it from all the speed bumps.

lol she is a picky swine, i was thinking some nice padded bucket seats and straps

Fitting bucket seats will cause some problems because the seat base cushions need to be removed to get access to the fuel tank filler cap - handy that. I'm planning on relocating the fuel filler cap to a more convinient location and using a civilian fuel tank.

yeah that fuel tank mod looks very do-able
if you use a 109 filler inlet and cab it can be put in that angled panel by the drivers door and the pipe could just run in there as its just an empty void
bucket seats will be hard work to get in and out becouse of the steering heel diameter but a smaller wheel will mean its very hard to turn so know you need powers steering all very cool mods but a lot of time and greaf
im gonna just stick with the standard seats

Using a 109 filler seems like a good plan. Is there enough room on that angled panel I wander? I might put mine just behind that panel and link upto the the fuel tank by welding together various bits of scrap exhaust pipe with a rubber pipe at either end

i think there should be enough space if you come off the inlet with a rubber pipe straight down then you should only need a few 90 deg bends with joiner to get you there
the tank inlet should be just behind the seat box i thought so i think it would go only 1 way to find out really

Thourght you guys might be interested in Mine and my Son Darrens IIA ambulance. We bourght it off Ebay last May

Couple of Pictures attached but the full album is on Facebook Login | Facebook

We completely rebuilt it and it had (and failed on a couple of minor points) its MOT yesterday. It should be ready for Gaydon though and as its been painted Bonatti Grey it should be on the Teamtombraider club stand!!
