I am about 80% through coiling my 80 inch, if you decide to do it..measure measure measure and measure again.

Some how the front axle was welded on 2 inches out!!! but a simple chalk bodge by my nipper.

The car now sits with a 78.5 inch wheel base but still needs its roll cage and all fluids so will grow a little once at working weight.

im with the others here, dont ruin a leafer unless you have to. if it is relatively original and has proper paperwork and id then keep it as it is and buy a coiler

Craig asked if it has been done I presume to see how easy or hard it would be to do himself.

I had lots of people giving advice on not to convert my own chasis but as its MINE, I decided to do it.

I would preffer to do this rather than put an illegal chassis under it and still claim my free road tax. Plus I can easily convert back to leafs as all the mountings are still on it.

What are your plans Craig.

Thanks gusys I think il keep the leafs and the 2.25 petrol, it seems in too good original condition to mess about. I think i will just restore it maby fit parabolics to smothen the ride.

old fred i know but i got the same question lol, can it be done and how ? could you leave the leaf springs on so that it still looks authentic but add coils?
and don't tell me to buy a defender cos if i had the money i'd have fecking done that already:p:rolleyes:

what gain/benefit are you wanting to achieve ?

softer ride mostly, the farm track i travel twice a day is as potholed as hell, i'm sure it doesn't do the old girl much good thumping up and down there :( guy who welded her up when the chassis split said the track was half our problem  i was thinking that coils may protect her as much as my arse!!! i don't want to lift her at all and tbh i'm not too bothered about the rough ride out on the roads;) i kinda like it lol:eek:

what state are the leafs in ? - might be worth fitting another set of good used originals if it's constantly hitting the stops

you could also try driving slower

thems parabolic springs, i'd assumed they would be better than old, altho opinion seems to vary on that:confused:

i do drive slow:p but they're nasty little deep potholes that even if you was pushing the landy would jolt her:eek: we all constantly moan at the farmer cos of the state of the track but as it's about a mile long he's not about to go out and get it tarmaced!!

would new shockers help? no idea how old ours are:eek:

might be a good idea to take them off and see how easy they are to compress - if they compress too easily they'll not be doing much damping - tis certainly the quickest/cheapest method of improving the ride

hey guys, could anyone tell us/me whats the easiest way to convert it? iv been trolling sites but cant seem to find anything of any great use.
(everyone in nz just seems to put series bodies on disco chassis, i dont have the space or money to buy a donor vehicle.) any advice would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

ridiculous
Save the money that you would spend doin the above sell the series then buy a defender.

If the leaf springs are old and rusty they probably aren't providing a lot of spring anymore. You could strip, clean and refit or replace - It'll probably make a reasonable difference. Fitting coils seems like a hell of a lot of work and can move you dangerously close to Q plate territory.

modification of the chassis in any form looses tax exempt status instantly.

So not worth it - that's one of the attractions - free tax :)
