Is there a trick to it? I'm taking the engine out of my Defender and have got to the point where everything is disconnected, the bell housing is supported and the engine slung and lifted to clear the mounts. I just can't get the engine away from the bell housing. I've jiggled and wiggled and even connected a ratchet strap as seen in the picture to try and pull it away but no luck so far. I've checked, re-checked and checked again that all the bell housing bolts are out and I'm certain they are. Any tips gratefully received.

@Galladog : Yeah, no other way to get it in there. I have a gravel drive and it was quite the experience driving it like that. No grip whatsoever.

@raywin : Nothing. It's being replaced with another one that works better. I've replaced the head gasket on this three times in the last 18 months or so, and it's had a reconditioned head as well and the gasket has gone again. I'm sick of chucking money at it so I've found a decent engine that I know is running to go in there.

Pity about that I was looking forward to a good rebuild thread.

I'm planning on a total rebuild in the future but for now I just want it back on the road and (somewhat) more reliable until then.

So I'm getting the new engine back in and making slow but good progress. I can't remember which way the fuel lines go back into the pressure regulator.Does the one with the green collar go to the top or bottom port?

It's been a long day but I drove it back out of the garage tonight. Engine transplant successful. Still plenty to do and give it a proper test run sometime in the near future.
