Sensor on top of engine

Whats the electrical connector for on the top of the engine, right in the middle. Looks like a sensor of some type?

have you got a blanked off EGR valve? it could be for that.

It doesnt appear to be but it will be soon as its going in the bin lol

Am intruiged as to what the sensor is - the wires on mine are buggered. My disco has EDC but if the sensor is to do with EGR valve then I'll cut the wires as it's long gone!!

Its the coolant temp sensor for the dread EDC system.There are switched overides you can install as this is the sensor that tells the fly by wire injector pump to advance its timing for cold starts....and it can be the source of endless trouble.
Go back through my posts and find the info that other kind people have posted up!

I dont have EDC so does that explain why its not connected

No because its used as a coolant sensor in those lucky enough not to have EDC.....though due to the position they tend to melt,as does the wiring associated so someone may have cut it off to cure a short.

So what does it do if you don't have EDC? I thought the sensor for the temp gauge was by the stat, as is the one that turns on the ac fans to aid cooling if things get too hot

i have one not connected and my temp works ok ? and the EGR is removed

its the temperature sensor for the EGR system, that along with the throttle position sensor on a non edc fuel pump will tell the EGR control unit the information it needs to position the EGR valve correctly.

On the non EDC version the sensor is used for the EGR, it won't let the EGR operate until the engine is up to operating temperature. On EDC modules it feeds the EDC with information which is then used for all sorts.

The coolant temp sensor for the gauge is down at the stat housing.

Well the other day the top of my EGR valve decided to part company with the rest of it so the EGR doesnt work anyway

Need to get round to removing it completely
