Hi

The disco has failed its M.O.T today on the self leveling suspension unit leaking, now i don't know much about cars at all but i've been quoted £300 +vat for the unit itself.

Nipped onto the internet and i've seen one at £215 but somewhere in the description (sorry please bear with me) there is mention of air? Soooo how can it be leaking if it is air?

Also is this a common thing on the TD5? or can i get a replacement seal or the such before shelling out lots of pennies on the full assy.

I'm up to £1500 in the past month and now getting worried.

Please help:)

Hi mate,

if there is air leeking its most prob going to be from one of the two air bags. padocks have these on offer for £80 each and it takes no more than 20 mins per side to take them off and replace.

regards

Just had 1 of my airbags replaced-parts and labour £140.Try a 4x4 specialist, not a Landrover dealer. The opposite bag went about 8 months ago and the previous owner paid £440 at dealer prices.
I"ve been told they do perish every 80,000 miles or so.If it is bag leaking it usually drops rear suspension on whatever side is the problem.
Hope this helps...

ahh right thanks for that.

Is there any fluid in the unit? I wonder how the mechanics knew it was leaking if its was just air?

freelander22 its through work so it was conveyed by phone, the service managers exact words were, you're self leveling suspension unit is leaking so its failed.

easyrider, no it never has appeared to, the abs and traction control warning lights came on last week when i was towing, but when i turned it off and then back on again they went away.

Thanks guys.

If you raise the suspension right up via the dashboard button then spray soapy water on and around the suspension air bags you should see bubbles where there is any leak.I cannot see how they can fail it on the mot.

i've been to speak to the mechanic today and told him what everyone has said, he said that its where the pipes go into the unit that there is oil leaking?? He isn't up on Landrovers so i'm now not even sure that its the unit he thinks it is, its being looked at properly on Monday and in the meantime i'm stuck with a punto.

Are you sure he is talking about on the top of the air bags, because he might be talking about on the top of the ACE Ram in the middle of the chassis on the anti roll bar because that is the only thing that could be leaking oil.But if they say it is on the top of the air bag then they are having a laugh and keep your wallet safe and try a local Landy garage NOT a dealer a good friendly little workshop Or a MOT station that don't do any repairs.

no its under the bonnet i think, thats why he thought it was the self leveling suspension assy. I'm all confused myself now.

SLS is AIR not fluid. The compressor unit is bolted to the side of the chassis under the passenger seat.
If it's leaking fluid from the 'air suspension under the bonnet'; I suggest you tell your mechanic to give up his job and go work on a ranch riding horses.

*mumbles in very small voice*
