hmmm, it depends on how much time you have i guess, personally i would take the vehicle along, demonstrate to them your friends motor works and then actually have a face to face conversation with them saying you want a full refund as the good supplied are/were not fit for purpose and that if one is not forthcoming you will be considering your position from there.

It would also be good to put all this down in a properly set out letter and repeat the same message. DONT threaten them with taking them to small claims court or reporting them to trading standards as, from my past experience anyway, this only gets people more wound up and annoyed, its best to try and sort it ammicably before bringing out the big guns so to say.

This approach has worked for me on several ocassions, both with vehicle problems and other things like IT suppliers etc.

Maybe try visiting them first and then go from there, let us know how you get on but above all don't get too wound up, I know its frustrating if you feel like you are loosing out and going round in circles but play it calm and usually the situation can be sorted out :)

(1)I could have then, according to trading standards rules and regulations,insisted on another new motor as it was,
goods & materials supplied as part of the service should be of a satisfactory quality i.e. free from defects.If the trader has failed to fulfil the above requirements then he should come back and replace the item, without additional cost.
however I didn't
(2) I brought it back, you repaired the 2 unattached wires on the motor

Unfortunately I believe you may have now waived some of your rights under the "Sale of Goods - Fit for Purpose Act" by allowing them to attempt to repair the new unit.

I was always told to never ever allow anyone to attempt a repair of any kind to a brand new (but defective) unit.

Once you have allowed a repair attempt, I believe they are within their rights to "repair" and are under no longer under any obligation to "replace".
 
just had an interesting phone call from consumer advice,
it seems that you have more rights , if you just buy an item and fit it yourself, that comes under sale of goods act, if the item is then faulty, you can state that you want it replaced not repaired and they have to honour it.
if you buy an item and have it fitted by them , this then comes under a service, and they can have as many attempts as they like to repair it, with-in reason, it is then up to you as to how many times, you class as too many, usually between 3 or 4 attempts is permitted, before you can start insisting on them fitting a replacement.
so now , i think i am going up to the garage and picking up my motor.
whether i repair it, or buy another one from a differant garage and bin it, i will decide later
 
an update(as requested)i bought another, new motor from a decent garage. i went up to the original garage and picked up my motor.(without telling them too much what i thought of them)
after making up my own test jig, using 12v led's a battery and a window switch,i repaired it, number 4 & 5 wires were in the wrong places,and not properly soldered, i also extended the wires. now i have a good spare motor
