Have learnt a lot from this site already.
This is not a request for help but feel free to add to any points made. This related to a series 1 cable operated brake.

1. If hand brake lever feels odd and will not move or only in jerks you handbrake is sezied on!
2. Do not fret about how you will get drum off as unlike many cars the disco handbrake drum is behind transfer box.
3. On front edge is 17mm bolt head . This is an adjuster nut turn anti and it should move shoes away from drum. MAKE SURE wheels are chocked/in gear etc.
4. It might be a internal fault but probably the cable is shot.
5. If you removed handbrak egaiter and switch panel you should see top of cable - could be worth trying release oil down there but drum off and new cable likely. Is cable pending wehn you push down or going back down the hole? To remove at lever end remove circlips holding pin to lever and round outside cable - remove pin and cable should drop/push down
6. New cable for me was £23.
7. You do not have to remove rear drive shaft at both ends. Only a front and then lever/pull away from drum. It will hang away from drum face but axle stand etc underneath might be good idea. a 14mm or 15mm?? socket on a 3/8 drive should get to the four nuts
8. Cross head screw to remove and drumn shoud ull off. DO NOT have head underneath as it is heavy and you might have oily hand by then.
9. Remove the short spring holding rhd side plate to backplate and bottom spring across the shoes. You can then pull out bottom end of cable up and out of plate.
10. Cable should pull out of backplate but might need a push from inside.
11. Clean inside drum, replaces shoes etc if needed. copper ease on contact points on back plate etc
14. put some grease on either end of new cable and re fit - make sure it is adjusted for max slack at top end so cable end sticks out enought from spiral outer cable
15. You might find it a right paid to refit spring and disc that get turned 90 degrees as the pin will move and you want one hand to hold that another for pliers and a third to hold spring before you push the disc on and try to to turn it - of course pins also turns! I used a piece of wood wedge between the front facing side of backplate and and bit of car about 10 inches in front. This was behind the pin and stopped it moving and turning. I am sure there are other ways like getting some one to help!
15. Adjustment is at the bold head on front of backplate and also at top end win curled black nut.
16. If you try to test new cable without reconnecting rear shaft (I had completely removed mine) and then have no forward drive try putting hand brake on and it might go forward. This worked for me!
I think thats it! I struggled with a few problems at weekend. According to my 80+ neighbour who was in army landrovers had common handbrake probs. Regular lubrication is the answer!

Hope this helps someone.

my j reg 92 disco has just developed a seised handbrake problem, it has just passed the mot within the last couple of weeks, my drive is verry steap, i allways reverse onto the drive but despite it being steap, i have to try driving the car back and forward untill i get wiplash from tha handbrake releasing, ive also had to drive for several hundred feet until it has released, the hand brake itself has never felt better since the mot with just 3 clicks as to it pointing to the roof before the mot.
can anyone help ?

driving back and forwards in order to get it to release is only going to cause damage - mechanically it's all very simple and so you should be able to replace the shoes and clean/re-furb the whole thing within a couple of hours

thats alot of transmission slack that yer gonna give a snatch load to everytime you go back and forth plus it wont do yer clutch any good, just bite the bullet and get it done.

Hi S3 S2 ?? Please confirm, ok S2-3 The fulcrum does seize up, remove the drum and back off the Hand Brake adjustment also back off the Manual adjuster, is the fulcrum ok and free? Make sure the HB lever and pull rod is set to flush with the housing, once done, fit the HB drum, adjust the manual adjuster to lock up the drum and back off at least 5 turns at no point should the drum bind.
The tighter the drum to the shoes will be detrimental if you off road the jumping of the G box will apply the HB just by its movement.
