Hallo

Hope you can help me diagnose my landy's problems...

It's my '73 Series 3 (88 petrol 2.25) and I haven't had it that long. An ebay "bargain" ha ha. Was running nicely to start with, although we have had a few blips with it losing power and then not wanting to start again. No smoke, evidence of oil/water leaks or anything untoward.

Put an old recharged battery in from my old american truck and this seemed to resolve the issues until it lost power again and decided it wasn't starting. Home on tow truck, checked battery charge and was going down to 8v when you turn the ignition. My dad said it's an old battery and buggered, get a new one. I did this, no joy - no start.

Next looked at cables/earth lead/connections etc. All seem fine. Gave the starter motor a big bash with a hammer while an assistant turned the ignition. No joy.

I though before going down the distributor, alternator, new starter motor route I'd give it a wee push in 4th to check no seizure and to my immense disgust it will not move!!!

This does not look good to me. I have had motors with seized engines before and to my knowledge they don't just suddenly do it - they warn you! I have smoke, overheating, burning oil at a rate of knots, leaks and mayo in the rad. This landy has been used regularly and was running pretty sweet.

What do you think? Would appreciate your help.

take spark plugs out and try the rocking test again - just to eliminate engine seizure, as storm says pointing to either your starter motor or solenoid (check it has a good body earth)

also also also............I had the same meself wiv me series ! I replaced the sol and starter......i'd been playing with the timing and the thing was pre watsitin and wouldnt turn over....just clicked ! might be worth a check

Wonderful wonderful, I like the positive outlook. I'm a **** mechanic haaa, so didn't relish the thought of an engine transplant. Good way to learn though. So why can't I push it in 4th? I am a strong lass and even the fella who is a brick ****house can't move it? That really worried me. Thank you very much for input btw it is appreciated fellas )

thinkin about it...it wernt the dizzy it was the carb ! i'd turned up the idlin speed way too much and the engine wouldnt turn over !....long day at work

Not saying you did, sometimes they bind a bit...but did you? lol :D

Nooooo lol. The trouble is with yew lot is that I never know when you are serious or taking the michael!

Is it honestly really hard to push a landy when its in gear? I've never tried before, it's dead easy in neutral :)

No problem. Enjoy. I think I know what I was doing wrong thanks to a helpful PM (thanks again!) so after tea going out for another bash.

This has not been a good week. I had a visit from pikeys last evening casing my vehicles. It's actually quite good that neither run at present as they won't be going any where fast.
