Don't think its quite so easy to whip prop orfff for the summer, that's for sure - not that there would be any need to!

What is it going to cost when the Haldex coupling clutchs need replacement? Just because something is new doesn't mean it's better than the older system
?? Probably is more expensive to replace, but it is better, well on VW anyway. My comment was a ref to the fact that as haldex completely removes connection front to back (until needed), no need to remove for summer as no stress placed on transmission or tyres!
I know the Haldex failed on my wife's Tiguan!! Although it was done under warranty it would have been a £1400 repair. Yes it does disconnect the drive to the rear which should reduce drive live wind up. The problem comes with how the system has been programmed. The Tiguan for instance connects up the drive if the computer thinks you are going to pull away to fast for the available grip so connects the drive to the rear too. This is how we knew the Haldex had failed as the car started to spin it's front wheels every time we pulled out of a junction!! The rear drive is connected up more than you might think.

Nodge - you have more knowledge than me. Our one drives like a normal FWD but in the recent snow you could feel the back wheels coming in which is what we want it to do - if as you say, the back wheels are driving all the time, I cant feel it under normal conditions. It's a road car that looks a bit more rufty tufty but is far away from an off road vehicle (as is a standard FL1). Said with

The rear drive does come in quite a lot. More than you realize until it fails that is. We have had a host of quality and reliability problems with the Tiguan, so many that it's now been replaced!!
