Of course it is probably bad form to make my first post on the LZ site begging for help but I'm about to do just that with regrets!

I have a 2000 TD5 ES with that fancy shmancy Harman Kardon sound system. When I play the radio or use the CD changer, I get intermittent, but frequent static sounds. It sounds awful. Oddly though, when I connect my ipod through one of those cassette tape adapters with a wire coming out of it, the sound is perfect!?!?!

Of course, I am perfectly willing to seek professional help for the issue but I thought that you fine LZ members might point me in the right direction so I don't have to go to a hifi shop and get fiddled for loads of cash.

A guy in my office said it was a "common" problem but I have found no discussion of it here in Landy Land.

Can anyone help a girl out with some advice? I'm not exactly Miss Fixit but I can check connections and stuff. Or does anyone know of a reputable repair shop around Harrogate in N Yorks?

Thanks in advance! ;-)

it sounds like static from the alternator
i think a suppressor should sort this problem out
there only about 10 quid from most good motor factors, they should come with fitting instructions, but most just plug into the ariel socket,

hope that helps and welcome to looneyzone

A late vehicle shouldn't need any additional suppression, and the HK system is a good one, so I'd suggest that you check what you can in the way of accessible connections, but more likely is that something on the back of the radio unit is working loose.

You'd need the radio to be removed to check that, otherwise have a look at individual speaker connections if the basic audio signal is OK.

Most of the speakers are just a matter of screw removal to get out of the door cards, the back door speaker is a bit more involved but still just a screwdriver job.

The aerial is part of one of the rear windows, there's a printed on strip like a demister on there.
