Hi I’m new to the forum. I have a set of seats in my S3 that aren’t too bad and would like to have them re-trimmed as a posed to a new aftermarket set. Any recommendations regarding a company to use. I’m based in the North West. Cheers.

Not the best pic, but only one to hand

To be honest, the delux seats aren't all that expensive to buy, I've replaced my fronts seats for a bit over £100 and it transformed the interior. The old seats were pretty tatty.

My thoughts are to keep as much of the original parts and re condition them, hence a re-trim. The delux are nice I had them in a previous S3, they are a bit softer too.

Land rover's use of the term "de-lux" always makes me smile. I have a "de-lux" boonet and its fair to say there's not much luxury from it. Likewise I have a mix of standard and "de-lux" seats; the driver seat back is delux and the centre seat squab, but there's hardly a fight over who gets what. It seems to be a choice between "hard without stripes" and "hard with stripes".

I find the seats in my series pretty comfy, having said, I don't drive it hundreds of miles. I just wish there was a bit more leg and elbow room. Apparently newer defenders ain't much better.

It is odd, I have driven 200 miles in the series and got out with aching arms and legs (and slightly deaf) but no back trouble. Done the same journey in a Merc SL with full electric leather seats with every kind of support and got out unable to stand up straight for 10 mins.

Seat upholstery is very easy to copy. Simply unpick each piece, lay over new material and cut out the shapes. Just a case of sewing back together.

This was my first attempt on some old battered bucket seats. All sewn together with an old Singer sewing machine.

Wow, that is amazing. Nice colour too. I have watched lots of videos and they make it look easy.
I guess I have nothing to loose with the old seats they are in good shape just a couple of rips.
Did you use leather or vinyl?
How many hours would you say you put into it?

It’s only vinyl so I could simply wash them down. The diamond pattern took me the longest to stitch. I suppose they took a few hours a night for a week. All you do to stitch patterns or lines in them is use 6mm scrim foam and stitch through both. I also made a plywood cubby box and covered that.

I use an old Singer, I repaired one my std seats by taking two covers that were worn in different places and remaking them into one, its still fine 4 years on. Its fiddly and the pinnng takes some practice as the material is stiff. There's also quite a skill to manouvering the seat cover in the sowing machine; they make it look easy when you see them uphostering cars on TV but it takes practice not to under up with all the cover stuck in the sowing machine.
