Sealant on radiator hose joints?

Is it necessary to use any type of sealant on the joints between the hoses and metal parts in the cooling system?

Is it just a case of push the hoses on and tighten the jubilee clips? If sealant should be used, what sort of sealant is recommended?

Not needed, just need to make sure everything is crud and dirt free.

If you're fitting new hoses, best to re-check the hose clips for tightness after a week or so. They seem to need nipping up a bit as they bed in.

I usually give a smear of grease, helps them on and fills in any scratches...

Thanks for the replies.

A suggestion I have heard before is to wet the metal pipe with methylated spirits before installation. This will help the rubber hose slide on more easily, and will evaporate leaving no residue.

That's a new one on me.
I think he one to avoid is Vaseline petroleum jelly types.
The ones that are OK are silicones.

Years back you could buy little tubes of "rubber lubricant" in model shops for wind up rubber band model aeroplanes (do those still exist?) - anyway the lubricant was a "soft soap" - whatever that is.

Wonder if the red rubber friendly brake grease would help. I had issues sealing my coolant pipes. Fortunately I bought good quality jubilee clamps which allowed me to keep tightening a little further every few days until I got a good seal as the rubber compresses.

Well they did in the late 90s/early 00s when I was about 10. I certainly made (and lost) a few.

I use washing up liquid for a lubricant (oo-er missus), but I thought the original question was about sealing? If you have trouble fitting new rubber or plastic hoses, try putting the end in a cup of hot water for a minute. But the softening effect lasts a very short time if the weather is cold!
