Screaming from my engine!!!!!!

Just drove over 600 miles this weekend and the car has been spot on....until i got to Exeter at Haldon Hill..After climbing the hill at full throttle the car has developed a ticking noise when i accelerate but this quietens when not under strain. At first i though exhaust....pretty sure not tappets as purrs normally.....Then i just went to use it again to go top the shop and at about 2 - 3000 revs i guess when the turbo would kick in there is a squealing noise......but it still pulls like a train so turbo working. .......Any idea......................please help?


Car is a 2.5 TD Range Rover 1996

Bearing in mind that I'm a complete newbie having had my P38 for a week, I wonder is yours an auto? I have heard an auto tranmission squeal in another type of car (Jag)

Fan belts, idler pulleys, and alternator bearings also produce sqealing sounds when they are not happy.

Ideas from the font of NO knowledge LOL

i would look at alternator first and belts etc

The slightest air leak from any air hose connection after the turbo outlet can make a squealing noise, and it will only happen under load when the turbo is blowing hard.

Thanks everyone.....i shall check all these ideas tomorrow.....like the idea of loose hose.....makes sense.....

not to sure about the ticking noise though... i dont think tappets as the engine is lovely and quiet before today and when not under strain....i first thought exhaust whole maybe....(hopefully). Will keep you updated and thanks again

A craked exhaust manifold can cause a noise like you describe and incidently the same tapping noise can come from the same crack as the exhaust gas comes through in pulses. As the engine increases speed the pulses smooth out to become a squeal.

Only a thought as I have little Range Rover knowledge and tend to 'live' over on the Disco forum.

Thanks...i shall have a look today....another feasable option, marvellous

Well just to let you know it ended up being the manifold gasket..... the screaming/whining sound stopped after a day or two aned was left with just the clicking/spitting sound. Sooty deposits were noted to the rear of the engine bay indicating an exhaust leak and low and behold it was just the gasket....Many thanks for all your help....
