aup rebuilding my 200tdi defender engine, had the block skimmed and new cam bearings fitted also the boars honed. I've put new rings on the pistons after seizing the gap in the boar and the rings are the right way up and the splits are positioned in the right places I found it hard to turn the crankshaft by hand, its had a new crank / crank bearings / con rod bearings all standard sizes and they have been checked with plastigage for the tolerance's. I've noticed a scratch in one of the boars from the new rings could this be due to turning the crank with lack of oil. I've lubed every thing in engine oil as I build. thanks ps only turned engine by hand.

how did you size (gap)the rings
i usually take the sharp edge off with a file ,though fresh honing will mark till rings have rubbed the sharp peaks off
measure piston heights prior fitting head

Obviously you did not gap the new rings properly or left bares on them. Pistons and rings should be assembled with oil.

the piston rings didn't need altering. I put them in the boar and pushed them down a bit with a piston to make sure they was level the gap was 0.40 top ring and 0.40 middle ring but I didn't oil the rings just the boar (idiot) I will check the piston heights james thanks
