Hi all hoping for some diagnostic help I've had a search but can't find anything that quite fits. Basically I have a sort of juddering/helicopter type noise that I think is coming from gearbox area possibly just behind but it's hard to tell!
Probably not uncommon but what's confusing:

1. Only happens in 4th gear between 25-35mph. Intermittency increases with speed until it just goes at about 35.
2. Doesn't always do it! Occasionally seems fine, sometimes louder than others.
3. Only does it under load, back off and it goes, so worse going up hills etc.
4. Seems worse from cold.

Initially I thought prop but can't see any play and I've greased em up made no difference. Gearbox seems spot on. No crunching, vibration, selection issues etc
Other thing I've noticed when it's had a long run it develops a bit of a clunk if on/off the throttle quickly but maybe not related? Always assumed that was just cos the oil in the box had got hotter.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I believe (well I've heard) that a clunking gearbox when coming on/off the throttle is indicative of the mounts being worn (i.e.its letting the gearbox move around a bit)

Greasing a stiff UJ journal hardly ever works, the grease just goes to the other three and the one you want lubricated, like the fourth little piggy gets none. An air powered grease gun can sometimes get some in.

Did you check u/j's with the handbrake off and transfer box in nuetral?

Handbrake off but transfer was in high, didn't realise it had to be in neutral. I will try again thanks!

Cheers all for the suggestions sounds like hopefully it is prop u/j's then was starting to fear a gearbox issue since it happens 4th gear only. For the cost of them think I might just try a pair of new props and go from there.

Handbrake drum loose/gearbox mainshaft nut loose? Mainshaft nut tool here if needed.
