Scared from Bristol!

Thanks for all your feedback. Its a difficult decision to make to be honest. Heart says disco. Head says forester. Wife says if the disco breaks down blah blah blah........!

If the Disco breaks you can fix it ya self. or get it fixed reasonably cheaply. If the Subaru Breaks you'll be pimping the wife to pay the repair bill

Forester is a nice motor. But it's ****e offroad..

Ignore the horror stories, just have a look at how many old discos are still on the road compared to other 4x4's.

I've had four d1's, not one of them has ever left me stranded by the side of the road.

Go for the Disco, you won't be disappointed. I've had mine for 10 years and love it more now than when I bought it. It's only had a replacement auto box, a new power steering pump and a new steering box oh and two new air springs but I wouldn't swop it!

Well, I just reckon I might. I've found a very nice face lift model on a 52 plate with 90k on the clock being sold by an enthusiast who has traded up to a Range Rover. Its a nice looking truck and I had a good old chat with the guy selling it. Going to see it on Thursday.

It has air suspension on it, which I know can be problematic. I'm lead to believe that repairing the suspension is not as expensive as it used to be. Is that correct?

Also, if I wanted to remove the two extra seats, (its a 7 seater) is that an easy job? Ideally I would like to remove the two rear seats and replace with the storage bins.

Any advice gratefully received. Also, is there a disco buyers guide on here?

Forester over a LR any day mate!

Get the Disco. It's a 'no brainer'. The seats come out easy. It's getting them back in on your own thats a pain. Especially when the spring goes off and your fingers are in the way...! Suspension isnt too bad and if you really get your leg in with the suspension then just get springs fitted.

Forester will have a petrol thirst and the parts are expensive. Also they are all wheel drive so not great off road. The land rover will do everything better, just ensure you check all the fluids and change them regularly

I would strongly recommend you drive one first if you haven't done so as you may be dissapointed! Certainly not everyones cup of tea!

Yes, I've driven both, and a few other 4x4's as well. Hence I've narrowed my list down to either the forester or disco. Obviously they are 2 very different beasts and I like them both for different reasons, just trying to decide which to go for. If the disco that I'm going to see on Thursday is as good as it sounds then I will probably go for it.

Haha I must say that should read over a Disco, Other LR's are still decent, My opinion has been tainted. Also I need MPG at the moment so any LR is a no no. Can't wait to get my series project in the summer

To be honest both are so different that it is impossible for us to pick for you. As with my position no LR or Scooby is any good as they are too thirsty C250 TDS is what I ended up choosing. But for that sheer feel and sense of driving you can't beat a LR, You can't beat the noise of the V8(Yes yes I actually did get some driving done). But 300TDI is a no brainer if you don't have your own private oil fields or a bank balance that shames Richard Branson.

Well, I've only been and gone and bought a Disco!! I picked it up last Sunday. 52 plate Td5 in gun metal grey. 90k on the clock with a full service history and in stunning condition. I bought privately in the end as most of the dealers I spoke to were rubbish.

The guy that I bought it from had had it for 7 years and was selling it to fund buying a Range Rover Sport. He's obviously looked after it as the body work and interior are immaculate plus he kept all the old receipts etc.

I've just had a new DAB radio/CD player installed as it came with a cassette player!!

Its a 7 seater and really I only wanted 5 so I was thinking of taking the extra two seats out and replacing them with the storage bins if I can get some in the right colour (black) and they aren't to expensive.

Also a popular theme on here is to get them re-chipped? Is this a viable money saving option re fuel costs or would it be better to leave it as standard? I read somewhere on the forum that there is a guy from Dynochip that does it, but I can't find the link now.

And finally, I've noticed a bit of condensation in the rear light clusters. I've hunted around the internet for new seals but can only find a whole clusters which are quite expensive. Any ideas where I can find just the seals?

Congrats on the purchase! Just to make you aware, the facelift headlamps are very nickable, there are a few threads on here about how to try and secure them.

Glad you went for the disco in the end, I'm sure you won't be disappointed! With regard to the original radio only having a cassette player, are you sure there isn't a 6 disc CD player under the drivers seat?

If it was mine. I would have it remaped as it will just improve the car no end. Make sure she is 100%(she does sound it). Blank EGR. If you are thinking of any other engine work I.e larger intercooler etc, Get that done before map!

I'm certain that in months to come when you've fully bonded with your disco and even given it a name (I promise I didn't name mine ), you'll wonder why you ever considered a forrester in the first place.

Didn't realise I had a multichanger for two weeks, it doesn't work though, so fits in well with the rest of the car.

That was one of the first things I checked prior to purchase! I would have probably still got it changed as I wanted DAB radio in the car.

How much does it cost for a re map and what improvements could I expect to see? Is it a complicated job or just a new chip in the ecu? Also what benefit would the blank egr have and would the blanking plate need to be fitted prior to the remap?
I notice that you are in Portishead. Where would you go for the remap?
