Hello everyone,

I'm one of the older brigade who has been driving an Xtrail for the last four years due to a dodgy hip. However I have always fancied a Land Rover so currently looking at a Range Rover Sport to be my next form of transport

Welcome:)

You say a few words that really don’t go together “limited budget” “05 sport that drives ok” “gearbox problems”
Sorry but if you are not prepared to/or be able too get in and amongst it...... don’t bother with that 1.

J

Well thanks for your input but it didn't really tell me anything about the problem, which after all was the point of my question. :)

Ok do some search’s on the gearbox, you will probably find it’s made of a lesser metal and needs upkeep.
Also I would search the engine type(TDV6? by any chance)

if you have a limited budget, I am suggesting you look around that’s all.

I have done some research already and a possibility is that it requires an oil and filter screen change or could need new control block. However, I was looking for other possible causes from the more knowledgeable members on this Forum without proffering my thoughts ;)

Welcome Aboard :)

Allow me to put @marjon 's point another way .... An RRS was a champagne car when new, and requires the maintenance proportionate to that - if it gets cola style maintenance ( ), then it won't end well - hence the gearbox issues, and probably also the reason it is for sale ;)

In terms of the actual issue - it might be any number of things - low fluid / wrong fluid / sensor or electrical issue ... needs the codes read as a first port of call IMHO...

An RRS on the cheap isn't really possible IME - YMMV. :)

Hi and welcome to the asylum, lol

I own a D3 which basically is virtually same as a RRS , however

RRS has hydraulic anti roll bar system , expensive if it leaks
2.7 has crankshaft issues , must change oil pump over and ensure belts are done

if there’s a gearbox issue , walk away , could be mechatronic failure or torque convertor , clutches etc etc

this is a buyers guide I done on the D3

https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/buyers-guide-inc-video.312800/

as mentioned there not cheap to look after , Helps if u can DIY , including having decent diagnostics, parts can be expensive , they will be extremely expensive if using A garage

hope that helps

Thanks for the Welcome and information Gary ......potential costs look frightening though I am encouraged that the particular 2005 Range Rover Sport I've been considering has only failed an MoT once in its lifetime and that was back in 2013 for the following reason:

Reason(s) for failure
  • Supplementary Restraint System warning lamp indicates a fault (5.4.2)
  • Front position lamp(s) not working (1.1.A.3b)

Thus I'm hoping it's indicative to being a well maintained vehicle

If it were an easy fix the current owner would have fixed it instead of selling it.

Thanks for the welcome but typical thoughtless comment added !! Not sure about the car not engaging gears, certainly someone didn't engage brain !!

The owner collapsed and died from a heart attack 2 days after the problem started, his widow doesn't drive so she's parted with it. HTH

Yer never mentioned any of that earlier? Sounded like you were looking to buy, as opposed to having bought, when creating this fred yesterday. You now state 'after 2 days' so I assume yer the owner of an eggspensive vehicle to maintain and repair, as opposed to looking to buy said vehicle.

We get a lot of peeps appear on ere looking to buy something but there's a slight issue with it. That slight issue could be anything including a replacement engine or chassis, down to a quick fix of which wire needs poked back in or yer need to clean a sensor.

On the subject of engaging fings... ask questions and we will help. But we will need the correct details. Please also bear in mind a vehicle bought new for £60k is full of eggspensive parts. They're just as eggspensive when its 10 years old. Not forgetting the golden service at 100k miles where everyfing needs replaced.

If one is financially able to own such a vehicle and regularly feed it with parts, then ownership is possible and pleasurable. If one were to engage logic they would go for one of the last Freelander 2's built, and live the dream without the running/maintenance costs.

Mentioning that the owner had died was not relevant to the question asked !!

And yet again you make assumptions as I have not bought it but rather just asked for info from those people who had first hand experience and knowledge of that particular problem , which obviously isn't you ....perhaps in your case you would best not commenting further and attend to your own difficulties with English grammar and spelling !!

Good Day to You !!

Fer fuks sake you've had a go at everyone.

If it's not relavent then why bring it up?

Yer making yer own assumptions anorl. Between me and you, one of us has a diagnostic device which works on the heap yer looking to buy. And the space and physical ability to change the gearbox if needed.

Best of luck with it.
