Why is it a problem?
You must know all this surely? To drive a UK car over here France) it has to be insured. To be insured it has to be taxed and MOTd. If it is an MOT failure, on rust, it cannot be driven, so it'd have to be trailered. @Ian M in France was talking about getting hold of a rusty old thing for spares. Not one that could be driven. Or have I missed soemthing?

Nobody mentioned an MOT failure but one with an in date MOT but unlikely to pass another was what I assumed he meant... trailer would not be cost effective you'd be better stripping it in UK and only bringing what's usable over...

What he actually said was
... I plan to buy a rusty UK one to use for parts
so I assumed an MOT failure. but yes, one that had an MOT but was likely to fail next time on rust might be a goer, as long as it got to his place without breaking down. But then some people do go over with empty trailers and bring stuff back, I met one guy who, behind his Disco had a huge trailer with one RR on it and a Disco shell, he must have gone over empty. Presumably he was buying them cos they were rust free. I, for years, took a trailer over and am thinking of taking a car trailer over every time I go, to put wifey's car on as she finds it too hard to drive the long distances now. As for price, it is cheaper to tow one over than drive two cars over.

I would most like to find someone who has moved over here with a discovery Td5 that is not worth registering here because it may not pass a ct (French mot) but can still be driven, you often get cars come up like this but not many discos, but as time goes on there will be more, I have got a 3.5 ton trailer that will take a disco but the UK is a long way and might end up having to change bit over on the Disco at the side of the road, I am in no rush and am keeping my eyes open

Apart from changing the headlights to LHD ones, friends whop have registered Brit vehicles over here have never mentioned that the CT was any worse than the MOT, in fact better as you actually get time to drive it around and fix it. But do you know of any part of the CT that is particularly stricter than on an MOT?

I think it is a lot easier than the MOT but around here they are not used to seeing a lot of rust on cars so can be a problem, Like in UK depends where you takeit, If you have a 2000 td5 say it would get 1200 pounds in the UK to get the C of C would be around 250 pounds changing lights (I have been told you do not need to now you can use the deflectors) cost of a carte grise may be 350 pounds a lot to spend on a car at the end of its life

You don't have to use the deflectors to change beam you can alter the deflection inside the headlamp... Just done a Barchetta...

It is a fact that getting the Carte grise can cost a fortune. My mates tell me so. Not so hard for us as we can keep our cars on English plates. Thought of buying a French car for over here, but have nowhere safe to keep it, so would have to add on cost or building at least a carport.

A interesting idea I had when I worked in the UK and lived in France was to have a second car, same colour same age same reg number, one lot of insurance no road tax if french plates, only CT on the French one, how often have you being stopped and the chassis number checked? I am too law abiding to do it or my wife was too law abiding to let me, the only time you would get caught is if you had a accident
