Saving by using lower RON fuel?

I’ve been searching and reading threads and comments about unleaded fuel. The comments I did see mainly related to the V6 motor. In NZ we have two grades of petrol, 91 and 95 [RON] both unleaded. I have a 1.8 K series motor and I believe that it’s expected to run on 95. However, I have removed the cat and completed a few mods to the head, induction and exhaust, so my question is this: Will I cause any harm to the engine or have poorer performance if I use the lower grade fuel? I’m thinking of things like preignition - knock, increased carbon build-up… increased running temp? don’t want to burn valves or melt pistons either!

The cost ‘saving’ is there but it’s not great, maybe $3.20NZ [£1.60] for 40L. Over a year’s running it would possibly amount to two or three fill-ups in value.

Would you do it?
