Sankey Wide Track "Expedition" Trailer Build

Progressing nicely now...

All hinges now made up for the front compartements. Have made this section unboltable...the reason being is that the "bulkhead" between these compartments will be ply...which no doubt will need replacing in years to come...with this section removable it makes that process much easier:



Trial fit of the main lid...



The underside was in very good nick...but thought it would be a good idea to whip it off and underseal it:



Hinged compartment taken out so the inside can be fully painted...wow thats clean...it hurts my eyes!:



Sneak preview of paint colour (we had to paint this bit before putting the body back on so that we didn't have to remove the body again before getting the bit behind the triangle painted ):

Are the holes deliberate or rusty bits?

I changed all the latches as they were crap so I was left with 4 per catch plus 4 M10s in the roof from the PO's RTT and then 4 in the floor from the old brackets that were holding the water tank in my welding aint great (learning) so its taking ages! just spent an hour doing 6 of them. 25 more to go!

If Im left with a few pin holes do you think it would be ok to use filler to finish them off? or is this a bad idea? eventually rattling off, falling out and taking my paintwork with it!?

Ah fair enough! sounds like you have a bit of work on your hands! You could use filler I suppose...but a pin hole? Just paint over it . Depends how retty you want it to be I suppose (of course if these bits were a structural weld, pin holes suggests not a brilliant weld, so would not simply ignore it - but this isnt the case on yours by the sounds of it).

If you think filler might fall out (which it probably wont), you could always finish it off with a bit of chemical metal or similar...that norally stays where you put it

excellent. I will see if my filler is ok then and if not bung some chemical metal in. Cant have a go tonight as I have my Russian Language class at the university!

Quick coat of paint on the outside...

Just put it away for winter as other projects to deal with...but its pretty much there now

Maybe it's just me being lazy...... But I'd put the tent on t'other way about so you wouldn't have to unhitch to put the tent up.

Ah, yes, the tent the other way round. We did think about this quite a lot and there are a few aspects to it. Firstly is that we often camp on un-level ground, so you cant raise/lower the front of the trailer much if it is attached to a car anyway. But the main point is this...most of the regularly accessed gear (food, water, camping equipment, clothes, etc) are kept in the back of the trailer. If the tent overhanged this, it would mean once the tent was pitched it would be a pain to then get stuff out, which would be annoying. This outweighs in our opinion having to un-hitch.

Pretty much there now with only a few minor touches left.

Mounting the waffle boards. Some simple brackets made and a hinged bracket on the other side with a padlock. The lids are now lockable. This wasn't in our opinion quite enough to stop the lids bouncing about - reckon the lock will just wear itself out. Added a home-brewed twist clamp (the red painted bit) to hold it down nicely:





Lids are now complete with lifters:



Simple way of securing the emergency water cans:
