The trailer will be used for camping...with the roof tent on the top. We did consider mounting the spare on the a bar...but we did not want too much weight on the nose of the trailer for a start. It also gets in the way of our ideas for access to the jerry cans...if you can imagine where the carry cans are now, there will be hinged lids that fold forwards (they cant go backwards as the trailer tent wont allow it). If the spare was on the a bar, that would be pretty much where you might want to stand to lift the cans out. If any of that makes sense! We also want to make use of the sapce in-between the jerry cans, so that will be another hinged lid compartment. Have not completely ruled out the idea of mounting it there though!

Could you not do a under mount carrier for the tyre behind the axle?

With the under mount carrier that would help off set the weight of the jerri cans of fuel, for your tongue weight on the back of tow vehicle

Indeed...all seems to make sense...I will look into it Although the tent is quite heavy and will have more weight on the rear?

not enough room with the rear legs in place. well not enough for a 33".

mine is coming along slowly. will post pics by the end of the weekend hopefully.

spare will go on the front A frame upright. mine has been extended so I should have the room.

If you are going to be towing off road and 'bush' roads think about either sloping front mounted items forward at top edge or being able to put a 'curtain' or net across front .
The reason is a lot of stones get thrown up from tow vehicles rear tyres and then bounce off front of trailer straight thru rear window of tow vehicle . HTSH

Would a very thick set of mud flaps on the rear of the towing vehicle not almost do the job of a net?

You need mudflaps as well , but it only needs one stone to get past them and have something to bounce off that does the damage. A net or canvas tarp works well, if you make it right you can always use the tarp on the vehicle front when wading !

Very true! Something will be sorted along those lines So basically the net "absorbs" the bounce from the rock/etc so it goes on the floor rather than being catapulted into the back of the vehicle.

Wheel deffo does not fit underneath with the feet there - and they are staying!

Its been way too windy lately to get much welding time in...but got a few bits done, mainly some of the bits that the roof tent is bolted to...the roof tent will be bolted onto these 2 bars:



Some of the supports to stop the thing from bouncing about (there will be more when the other bits of the "design" come together. As it is, it copes with a grown man jumping up and down on it with very little flex



And a simple way of strapping the wheel down (yes there will be something to stop it from bouncing upwards )





And started to fill in the holes from the lift:

I'm now pretty sure my next expedition will be in a boat

I pretty much need to go everywhere to one up my brother...

I'd like to do a solo circumnavigation, following the general Vendee Globe route



But as I wouldn't be racing, I could stop everywhere, and detour as far as say Australia...

This is obviously dependent on me making more money than I currently am...

I know where you are coming from...but I dont really want it on he outside of the trailer...could easily make a swingaway on the tailgate...could put it on the A-frame, but don't really want either of those, both would be annoying. I dont see it as lost space really, I see it as space used by something quite essential...and there will be plenty of room for everything else...its not exactly going to be full to the brim with kit . Even the void between the jerry cans is pretty massive!

Going to work on it at the weekend as the weather should be nice...perhaps will fill some more gaps in..perhaps do a bit more frame work After I have looked at the weirdness of 1st and 2nd gear on the Series 2a!

In our minds a dencent amount of progress has now been made...

Filled in all the gaps now and painted in anti-rust stuff:



Then made up the mounts for the roof tent. We did not want them to be bolted directly to the rails, as we wanted airflow between the top of the trailer lid and the botton of the roof tent:





Then made up a frame for one of the hinged lids at the front of the trailer:
