Want to get a rear locker for my 110 but comtemplating on getting a spare Salisbury to build up with a Detroit locker, Ashcroft shafts and hubs with new bearings, seals etc

Or is there any real advantage in the Salisbury over the rover axle and be just better off to get a locker for the current rover axle, stick it in and forget and uprate the shafts if and when needed?

Depends what you are using your Landy for. My standard Rover front axle got bent on a trip through Morocco. It had survived a couple of previous trips. If your into competition stuff then I would say go for a Salisbury. If you just do a bit of off road I don't think I would bother. The Salisbury is a much heavier piece of kit. I could man handle the Rover one myself. It took three of us to man handle the Salisbury. There is a certain amount of satisfaction knowing you have a Salisbury up front. I use mine collecting wood in the forest, dragging large tree trunks along and trailing heavy wood. Mine was bent so I had to do something about it. I intend on keeping mine so I considered it money well spent.

Cool. I already have trutrac for the front so won't be changing the front to a Salisbury. Only just uprate the shafts, CVs etc.

Wouldn't be doing too much extreme Offroading with it but then again, when you have lockers and 33" muds... It's easy to try tracks that you really shouldn't be doing :D

Will be running a fair amount of power with a TD5 with VNT, intercooler, remap and all the usual bits and do a good bit of towing so I suppose its mainly a question would the Salisbury rear axle and diff be more capable of taking the power over a rover axle rather than getting bent.

I like the idea of being able to remove the back cover off the Salisbury to inspect the diff too of course and could get the bolt on heavy duty covers rather than the crap terrafirma diff guard I have on the rover axle

fitting the detroit in the salisbury is much easier as you dont need to set any backlash, as its just a diff centre,

Would the Detroit locker not be similar for both rover and the Salisbury axles?

Setting backlash wouldn't be a problem for me anyway as I'm well used to rebuilding diffs for cars and other stuff like that and have the tools needed but nice to know putting it together would be an easier job all the same :)

Main reason I'm thinking about changing is if the Salisbury was a stronger axle in terms of load bearing and being capable of transmitting more torque than the rover version.

Suppose the trouble then is though, the drivetrain is still only as strong as the weakest link and that would still be the front rover axle

yes you do diff carrier is shimmed behind both bearings ,you be bloody lucky if shims are exactly the same needed for both carriers ,shims alter preload and backlash

salisbury is massively stronger

something was wrong then ,they sit behind carrier bearings ,all have them and you need to pull bearing off each time to swap them to get settings correct

none behind my carrier bearings, just undid the carrier, swopped bearings and put back, seems to work ok

Found a drum brake Salisbury. Am I right in thinking, I could use this on the 110 and swap the 110s brakes over by buying Disco 1 front discs and the appropriate calipers carriers or must I just keep looking for a disc brake Salisbury?
And would there be any advantage with either option other than the drum axle probably being cheaper

Was annoyingly informed that I missed out on a Salisbury disc brake axle with Detroit locker that was for sale a couple of months ago when I told somebody yesterday that I was thinking of fitting one to the 110

No need to touch the bearings if you have a known good axle mine has done 20K miles since detroited and its been in and out a few times. It was shimmed but no need to touch them unless your an animal with the axle spreader

I have a drum braked salisbury axle I'm stripping and weighing in tomorrow! The hubs and stubs are worth more to me than what I'd get plus I've ripped it apart and now have a homemade locker for my series with a salisbury
