Is the NUT ok? If in doubt GET A NEW ONE. If the thread has been damaged and you recut it with a tap (a big expensive one) there's a risk it will strip off and let the steering wheel come off in rough driving. That's just what you need most driving off-road - the steering wheel coming clean off in your hands at the edge of a sixty foot drop into a flooded quarry.

The shaft is easy to fix using a small sharp fine flat file and a baby hacksaw.

You any good at delicate jobs?

hi i have a new nut but what i am after is the type of thread and the size so i can get the correct die to remake the thread on the end of the steering column it is all stripped and needs fixed before i can put it back together

if there's not enough metal to tap your wasting your time. you need a new shaft. be safe.

I agree with that, and he told us himself it's all stripped.
So what is the die going to cut threads into? It won't reach, and if it does it will only be scratching.
Don't even think about this.
Get another shaft.

thanks for that guys looks like i better get hold of another shaft

Good Lad.

Having the steering wheel come clean off while tackling a bumpy road .....

Ouch ... and there's a crash into a great big stupid tree at only 20mph but you didn't have your belt on because you were off the public highway and so you skewered your chest right deep on the steering column and it stabbed into a lung ... or your heart ...

Naaah .... get a new one. Use the old one for a general big lever.
